1.1.1 Defining Communication
• Carl Rogers • Julia T. Wood
Real communication occurs when we listen with Communication is a systematic process in which
understanding- to see the expressed idea and people interact with and through symbols to
attitude from the other person’s point of view, to create and interpret meanings
sense how it feels to him, to achieve his frame of
reference in regard to the things he is talking about
• Joseph Devito
• Elizabeth Tierney
Communication occurs when one person(or more)
Communication as a process which begins when sends and receives messages that are distorted
you have a message that you want to deliver to an by noise, occur within a context, have some
audience. Your audience receives the message- effect, and provide some opportunity for feedback
reacts to it – then responds appropriately
Key terms in the 6 elements which are present in all
communication acts

Ref page 5
Effective communication is
encompassing oral eg speaking
and non-verbal communication
eg body language like nodding
1.1.2 Types of Communication: 3 types
a. Oral Communication b. Written Communication
is when information, thoughts and ideas are is exchanging infromation using the written language being
conveyed via a spoken language
words and sentences
- Face2face
- letters - faxes
- Meetings
- memos - email
- Voice mail messages
- reports - minutes of meetings
- Teleconferencing
- tables - diagrams
- Oral presentations
- news releases - charts, graphs
- Public Speaking
Advantage: messages sent quickly and Advantage: provides documentation, proof of exchange in
feedback received almost immediately information
Disadvantage: little or no chance to reflect
on what is said Disadvantage : immediate feedback is not always available
c. Non-verbal Communication Points to ponder on!!!
no words used but feelings expressed through
gestures, facial expressions and body face2face interactions
languagewhich can be a powerful form of • oral communication often goes
communication hand-in-hand with non-verbal
The following incoporates non-verbal communication
communication: • effective communicators usually
- appearance combine both modes (verbal and
- posture non-verbal) communications to
reinforce their message
- eye contact
body language
- nervousness
• can be very powerful in
- grooming
supporting what you say
- dressing • it actually shows how you feel eg
a smile when you say thank you
(i) To inquire - get information
The purpose (ii) To inform- disseminate information
of (iii) To persuade- influence and bring them
communicati to agree with your way of thinking
on (iv) To develop goodwill- maintaining
cordial and harmonoius relationships
1.2 MODELS OF COMMUNICATION
• three models of communication introduced
• each developed when a flaw was detected and corrected
views communication as a one way process (linear process)
where the
speaker speaks and the listener listens but.......
1.2.1 Laswell introduces the 5 questions which helps effective
Linear communication to work being WHO-WHAT-IN WHAT CHANNEL-
TO WHOM-WITH WHAT EFFECT
Model by
...so LINEAR MODEL is where a speaker speaks and listener
Laswell listens based on the five questions which helps effective
communication proposed by Laswell
Shannon n Weaver (1949) model includes noise or interferences
that distorts understanding between the speaker and the
1.2.2 Interactive Model by Schramm and
Wood
• Schramm and Wood saw a flaw in the LINEAR MODEL whereby it was a one-way
communication where the speaker speaks and listener listens. So there in only listening and no
speaking nor sending of messages
• Introduced the INTERACTIVE MODEL where listener or speaker provides feedback to the
sender of speaker. Both receive the messages and take turns to communicate with each other
making Source’s field of way process)
it interactive.(two Receiver’s field of
experience experience

Feedback
• Speaker and listener communicate better if they have common fields of
experience/ or fields that overlap
1.2.3 Transactional Model
based on the flaw of the Interactive Model where communicators can both send and
receive messages at the same pace and also failed in showing that communication is a
dynamic process which changes over time.
Transactional Model shows that elements in communication are
interdependent. Each person in the communication process can act as
the speaker and listener and can be simultaneously sending and
receiving messages.(take turns to speak and receive messages)
• Communication is an ongoing and continuous changing process.
• Each element exists in relation to all the other elements.
• Each person in the communication process reacts depending on factors such as
background, prior experiences, attitudes, cultural beliefs and self-esteem.
• Noise is taken into account.
• Takes into account changes that takes place in the communicators fields of personal
and common experiences.
SUMMARY OF
MODELS AND THEIR
FLAWS
LINEAR MODEL INTERACTIVE MODEL TRANSACTIONAL MODEL
Laswell Schramm and Wood
speaker speaks and listener receiver or listener provides elements in communication are
listens feedback to the sender or interdependent meaning each
speaker. person in the communication
Laswell introduced the five Thus the speaker or sender of process acts both as speaker
questions which effectively the message also listens to the and listener and can be
describe how communication message and gives feedback simultaneously sending and
works making both take turns to receiveing messages
communicate. This feedback is
either verbal or non-verbal takes into account noise or
interference in communication
it also indicates better
communication if both have takes into account changes that
common fields of experience happen in communication
communicators share common
grounds of interest
FLAW - communication was a FLAW - does not indicate
one- way process where simultaneous communication
speakers only speak and and communication as a
listeners listen AND do not give dynamic process which changes
feedback over time
