TECHNOLOGY IN

NURSING
EDUCATION AND
COMMUNICATION
DISTANCE EDUCATION
• Distance education, also known as
distance learning, is a method of
education where teachers and
students are separated
geographically, utilizing technology to
facilitate communication and learning.
TECHNIQUES USED IN
DISTANCE LEARNING
1.SYNCHRONOUS AND ASYCHRONOUS
LEARNING
• SYNCHRONOUS LEARNING: Involves real-time
interaction, like video conferencing or online chats,
mimicking traditional classroom settings.
• ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING: Offers flexibility
with pre-recorded lectures, online modules, and
self-paced learning materials, allowing students to
learn at their own schedule.
2. ONLINE DISCUSSIONS AND FORUMS
• Facilitate peer-to-peer interaction and collaborative
learning, fostering a sense of community and allowing
students to engage with course material in a more
dynamic.
3. INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES
• Virtual field trips, simulations, and problem-solving
exercises enhance engagement and understanding.
Concept mapping and real-world case studies
encourage critical thinking and application of
knowledge.
4. TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION
• Webinars, videos, and interactive learning objects utilize
diverse media to cater to different learning preferences.
Online assessment tools and platforms allow for
convenient and efficient evaluation of student progress.
5. TIME MANAGEMENT AND SELF-DISCIPLINE
• Effective time management techniques, like the
Pomodoro Technique, help maintain focus and
productivity. Creating a dedicated study space and
utilizing website blockers can minimize distractions and
enhance concentration.
E-LEARNING
• E-learning or electronic learning, is the
delivery of educational content through
digital devices like computers, tablets, and
smartphones. Unlike traditional learning
methods, e-learning enables individuals to
access courses anytime, anywhere,
making it a flexible and efficient approach
to learning.
PURPOSE
• The primary purpose of online learning is
to provide flexible, accessible, and often
cost-effective educational opportunities,
enabling individuals to learn at their own
pace and from anywhere with an internet
connection, catering to diverse learning
styles and schedules.
A. FOR STUDENTS
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
1. Flexibility in learning 1. No direct contact with
teachers
2. Complete autonomy 2. Frequency and distrust in
the use of digital and
educational tools

3. Follow-up and self-

assessment
4. Management and
independence at work
B. FOR TEACHERS
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
1.Provide basic conditions 1.Lack of direct contact
for assessing the level of
learners
2. Personal training in the 2. Multiple procedures to
use of digital tools be taken
3. Flexibility in tables 3. Communications are
mostly written
4. Assist learners directly 4. Difficulties to control
wrongful activities
INTERNET
• The internet is defined as a global network
of linked computers, servers, phones, and
smart appliances that communicate with
each other using the transmission control
protocol (TCP) standard to enable the fast
exchange of information and files, along with
other types of services.
PURPOSE
• The primary purpose of the internet is to
facilitate the global exchange of
information and communication between
computers and devices. It allows for the
sharing of data, resources, and services
across a vast network, connecting people
and systems worldwide.
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

1. Easy access to information 1. Excessive information

2. Global connectivity 2. Privacy concerns

3. Economic opportunities 3. Cybersecurity threats

4. Communication revolution 4. Digital additional

5. Entertainment galore 5. Misinform, Disinformation,

and Malinformation
STRATEGIES (4) THAT USE CAI IN NURSING
COMPUTER-ASSISSTED INSTRUCTION (CAI)
• A method of using computers to deliver educational materials and activities.

1. TUTORIAL MODE
• This approach uses computer-based tutorials to present information and
guide students through learning objectives. Tutorial can provide a structured
explanation of concepts, demonstrate procedures, and offer feedback based
on student responses.
2. SIMULATION
• Simulations offer a safe and controlled environment for nurses to practice
skills and decision-making in realistic scenarios. Computer-based
simulations can mimic various clinical situations, allowing students to
experience different patient conditions, respond to emergencies, and
receive feedback on their actions.
TYPES OF SIMULATION
• PATIENT CARE SIMULATIONS
Using virtual patients or mannequins to practice
procedures like medication administration, wound
care, or inserting IVs in a safe and controlled
environment.
• SCENARIO-BASED SIMULATIONS
Presenting and realistic clinical scenarios and
requiring students to apply their knowledge and skills
to make decisions, according to a document on
computer-assisted instruction.
• VIRTUAL REALITY (VR) SIMULATIONS
Providing an immersive and realistic experience for learning complex
procedures or understanding anatomical structures.

3. DRILL AND PRACRICE

• This strategy focuses on reinforcing learned concepts and skills
through repetitive practice exercises. Computer-based drill and
practice can provide individualized feedback, assess student
progress, and reinforce knowledge retention.
4. GAMES
• Interactive games can be used to make learning more engaging and
fun while reinforcing key concepts. Game-based learning can provide
students with a different approach to understanding complex material
and can also foster teamwork and problem-solving skills.
