Jawaharlal Nehru (born November 14, 1889, Allahabad,
India—died May 27, 1964, New Delhi) was the first
prime minister of independent India (1947–64), who
established parliamentary government and became noted
for his neutralist (nonaligned) policies in foreign affairs.
He was also one of the principal leaders of the
Indian Independence Movement during the 1930s and
’40s.
Lal Bahadur Shastri
Known for: Shastri is known for his
integrity, humility, and hard work. He is
also known for the slogan "Jai Jawan Jai
Kisan" that he came up with during the
1965 Indo-Pakistani War.
Death: Shastri died unexpectedly on
January 11, 1966.
Birth: Shastri was born on October 2, 1904 in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh. .
Family: Shastri's father, Sharada Prasad Srivastava, was a school teacher who
died when Shastri was a child. His mother, Ramdulari Devi, was the daughter
of Munshi Hazari Lal, the headmaster of a railway school in Mughalsarai.
Education: Shastri started his education at the East Central Railway Inter college
in Mughalsarai, and then went to Harish Chandra High School in Varanasi.
Political career: Shastri was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and left his studies at age 16
to join the Non-Cooperation Movement. He enrolled at Kashi Vidyapeeth, where he
earned the title "Shastri". After India gained independence, he held several key roles in
the Union Cabinet. In 1964, he became India's second Prime Minister.

Early life
Born Indira Priyadarshini Nehru in Allahabad, India in
1917, she was the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru,
India's first Prime Minister. She studied in India and at
Oxford University.
Political career
She was a member of the Indian National Congress and became Prime
Minister in 1966 after Lal Bahadur Shastri died in office. She was the
leader of the Congress Party and served two terms, from 1966 to 1977 and
again from 1980 until her assassination.
Major events
During her tenure, India won the 1971 war against Pakistan, which led to the creation
of Bangladesh. She also oversaw the incorporation of Sikkim in 1974.
Assassination
On October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her
bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, at her residence in New
Delhi. The assassination came after Operation Blue Star, a military action
ordered
Dead by Gandhi against Sikh militants in the Golden Temple.
Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated at 9:30 AM on 31 October
1984 at her residence in Safdarjung Road, New Delhi.
