What is Education for S
ustainable Developmen
t?• Education for sustainable
development is a
framework for learning to
live sustainably and to
preserve our planet for
future generations.
• Sustainable development
is generally thought to
have three components:
environment, society, and
economy.

Why is ESD
Important?
Education for Sustainable
Development (ESD) is
important because it teaches
us how to take care of the
planet and each other. It
helps us learn ways to protect
the environment, reduce
poverty, and make sure
future generations have a
good life too.
Examples of ESD in
Action
• School Projects:
Recycling programs, energy-
saving initiatives, community
gardens.
• Curriculum Integration:
Including sustainability topics
in subjects like science,
geography, and social studies.
• Community Engagement:
Partnerships between schools
and local communities to
promote sustainability.
How Can You
Contribute?
• Personal Actions:
Reduce, reuse, recycle, and
adopt sustainable habits.
• Education and Advocacy:
Share knowledge about
sustainability with others.
• Involvement:
Participate in local
sustainability projects and
initiatives.
Education is the
Key to Quality Life.
Education raises the econo
mic status of families; it impr
oves life conditions, lowers i
nfant mortality, and improve
s the educational attainment
of the next generation, ther
eby raising the next generati
on's chances for economic a
nd social well-being. Improve
d education holds both indivi
dual and national implication
s.
In terms of level of teaching,
we have to adopt different
strategies:
• Early Childhood: Use hands-on,
playful activities. Focus on simple
concepts like recycling, nature
exploration, and the basics of
caring for the environment
through stories and games.
• Primary School: Introduce more
structured activities like school
gardens, environmental projects,
and lessons on how everyday
actions impact the planet. Use
interactive lessons and
discussions.
In terms of level of teaching,
we have to adopt different
strategies:
• Secondary School: Incorporate
critical thinking and problem-
solving activities. Engage students
in research projects, debates on
sustainability issues, and
community involvement to address
real-world challenges.
• Higher Education: Focus on in-
depth analysis and interdisciplinary
approaches. Encourage students to
undertake research, participate in
policy discussions, and work on
practical solutions for complex
sustainability issues.
What can schools do in order
to save the planet?
Implementing the concept of
sustainability in school curricula,
involving teachers, students,
parents, and communities,
associating formal and non-
formal education. The
community, in and out of the
school, meets to discuss the
theme and to build eco-political
projects in schools, attaching
education and sustainability. The
result is the construction of an
eco-school.
• Apart from building environmental
awareness, and positive
environmental attitudes and
values, it also needs to be
refl ected in the day-to-day running
of the school, in the non-formal
curriculum or hidden curriculum.
• A curriculum that promotes ESD m
ust continuously be
reviewed to address the new
environmental, social, and
economic crisis.
• It must also involve the school pop
ulation, not only the
students.
Let's work together to build a more su
stainable world through education!

you very
much!
