TYPES OF HEALTHCARE

There are three types of health care and that is the :

• Primary care

• Secondary care

• Tertiary care.
Primary care

• In this patients are given a day to day care by the health care provider that serves as the first
contact. This is also called as the primary care since this serves as the initial point of contact
between the people or the patient and the health care provider.

• At the primary level of health care, we include Primary health centers (PHCs), and subcenters
(SCs).
In the Indian context, primary health care is provided by the complex of primary health centres and
their subcentres through the agency of multipurpose health workers, village health guides and trained
dais. Besides providing primary health care, the village "health teams" bridge the cultural and
communication gap between the rural people and organized health sector. Since India opted for
"Health for All" by 2000 AD, the primary health care system has been reorganized and strengthened
to make the primary health care delivery system more effective.
Sub-Centres (SCs):

• The SCs is the first interaction point between the primary health care and local community.

• Currently, there are 1,56,231 Sub-centers are running in the country (as on 2017).

• Each sub-centre is required to be manned by at least one ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife), female
health worker and one male health worker.

• The main function of health sub-centre is to deliver preventive and primitive care together with the
basic curative care
Primary Health Centre (PHC):

• Primary Health Centre (PHC) is the first interaction point between the medical officer and village
community.

• The primary health centres are established and maintained under the Minimum Needs Programme
(MNP)/ Basic Minimum Services (BMS) by the state government.

• As per the minimum norms, there should be a medical officer supported by 14 paramedical and
other staff to manage a PHC.

• There are 25,650 PHC’s functioning in the country (as on 2017).

Secondary care

• It provides health services in which the primary care physician refers a specialist with more
knowledge or who specializes on the patient’s health issue.

• At this level more complex problems are dealt with.

• In India, this kind of care is generally provided in district hospitals and community health centres
which also serve as the first referral level.
Community Health Centres (CHC’s):

• Community health centers (CHC’s) are the first referral unit for 4 PHCs and are being established
and maintained by the state government

• A CHC is to be manned by four medical officers specialized in surgeon, physician, gynecologist,

and pediatrician with 21 paramedical officers and other staff.

• As per the IPHS norms, a CHC should have at least 30 beds, x-ray machine,Operation Theater,
delivery room and labs.

• Currently, there are 5,624 CHCs working in the country (as on 2017).
Tertiary care

• In this person or the patient has been referred by his/her primary and secondary health care
providers to the specialists or to the center that has an advancement facilities or equipments in a
way that will cater the person’s health issue. This is also known as a highly specialized consultive
care for special treatment and diagnosis.

• Tertiary health care includes medical colleges and advanced medical research institutes.

• Tertiary health care should be well integrated and well equipped with all the modern medical
technology
