What is a human person?
The term “human person” represents someone with a clear origin
or classification. Biblically, humans trace their lineage to Adam and
Eve, while in science, human evolved from primates, specifically
within the mammalian classification. Over time, humans have
evolved from early hominids to modern homo sapiens, adapting
not only physically but also socially, developing concepts such as
power, politics, and economics. These developments led to the
creation of structured political and economic systems that
recognize and protect individual rights.
A human person is understood as a physical
being, comprised of body, soul, mind, and
spirit, and is entitled to certain rights and
privileges within the state to which they belong.
Human person is generally distinguished in two
ways:
COGNITIVE SELF PHYSICAL SELF
The Cognitive Self, which is The physical self, on the
intangible, encompasses the other hand, is visible and
inner belief, desires, dreams, relates to the body, including
and intentions of a person, characteristics like physical
essentially answering “what” appearance and strength,
a person is. addressing “who” a person is.
What is an embodied spirit?
The concept of an “embodied spirit” refers to the vitals core within
us, which animates our thoughts, actions, and words. It represents a
union of body and soul, which work together as an inseparable whole.
In Cristian philosophy, this embodiment of spirits indicates that the
body and soul are intertwined—one cannot function without the
other. Thus, the embodied spirit encapsulates the idea that human
beings are a blend of physical presence and inner spiritual essence,
each influencing and shaping the other. Therefore, the embodiment
of the spirit is the union of the human body and soul.
HUMAN PERSON AS AN EMBODIED SPIRIT
1. SELF- AWARENESS – refers to person to have a clear understanding of oneself,
including one's thoughts, emotions, identity and actions. The human person is defined by
a deeper awareness which is driven by rationality or human thought.
This awareness gives rise to the notion of the "Self", which philosophers describe as the
person who is actively aware that they are perceiving and experiencing reality.
Interiority – is the quality of being focused on one's inner life and identity.

4. DIGNITY – is the innate right to be
respected and valued. Human dignity
is rooted in the nature of a human
being. This means that a person can
have dignity simply because of the
fact that they are human. Having
human dignity can also encourage us
to seek what is good. Doing good
actions can promote and uphold the
dignity of a person.
LIMITATIONS OF A HUMAN
PERSON
Human nature has
limitations despite being an
embodied spirit.
Ex. Human beings do not
have the ability to fly, nor
can they breathe
underwater.
With the help of human
knowledge and creative
thinking, people have invented
useful tools and vehicles.
The ability to surpass limits is
called Transcendence.
Transcendence refers to the concept of going
beyond ordinary limits. It is also an important
trait that distinguishes the human person
from other beings in existence.
Transcendence also means overcoming
oneself or being in control even if the
body reminds us of certain tendencies.
