Pipes Materials

The most common type of materials used in chilled Water System, Oil & Gas
Application is Carbon steel pipes for both underground and above ground
application.

Three different types of carbon steel pipes used in above applications are :-

ASTM A 53 is Standard Specification for Pipe available in Black and Hot-Dipped, Zinc-
Coated, Welded and Seamless.
ASTM A 106 is Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High-
Temperature (Upto 750 Deg F) Service.
API 5L is mainly developed for Line pipes used in conveying gas, oil, and water in oil and
gas industry.
ASTM A 53 PIPE TYPES
The testing requirement for A53 Pipes are less stringent (rigorous or tight) than for A106.

ASTM A 53 Pipes have three different Grades and Types.

Types and Grades. This specification covers the following types and grades:

Type F—Furnace-butt-welded, continuous welded Grades A and B.

Type E—Electric-Resistance-Welded (ERW), Grades A and B,

Type S—Seamless, Grades A and B.

Similar to ASTM A 53, ASTM A 106 pipes have different grades & its specification covers seamless

Nominal Pipe Size
Pipes are defined based on Nominal Pipes Sizes (NPS) & Thickness is classified as Schedule.

Pipe dimensions can be found in two standards:-

ASME B 31.10- Carbon Steel
ASME B 31.19-Stainless Steel

The NPS is very closely related to the inside diameter in inches, but only for NPS 1/8 to NPS 12. For
NPS 14 & Larger, the NPS is equal to the Outer Diameter (OD). For a given NPS, Outside diameter is
constant and the wall thickness increases with larger schedule.
