Elements: An Introduction
Year 7 Science Presentation
What is an Element?
• An element is a pure substance made up of
only one type of atom. Elements cannot be
broken down into simpler substances by
chemical means. Each element is unique and
is represented on the Periodic Table.
Chemical Symbols
• Each element is represented by a unique one
or two-letter symbol, such as H for Hydrogen,
O for Oxygen, or Na for Sodium. These
symbols are used universally in chemical
equations and formulas.
The Periodic Table
• The Periodic Table is a chart that organizes all
known elements by their atomic number,
which represents the number of protons in an
atom's nucleus. Elements with similar
properties are grouped together in columns.
Common Elements in Daily Life
• Some common elements we encounter every
day include:
• - Oxygen (O) in the air we breathe.
• - Carbon (C) found in all living things.
• - Iron (Fe) used in construction and tools.
• - Calcium (Ca) in our bones and teeth.
Metals vs Non-Metals
• Metals and non-metals differ in their
properties:
• Metals:
• - Shiny, good conductors of heat and
electricity, malleable, and ductile.
• - Examples: Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Gold (Au).
• Non-Metals:
