Interesting facts
because of the fast growth of the industry,
elegance of designs and fineness of workmanship,
Filipinos export articles with embroidery work.
Lumban, Laguna is known as the "Embroidery
Capital of the Philippines". Fine Jusi and Piña cloth
are embroidered by hand, and the finished product
is worn by males as Barong Tagalog and by females
as Saya (Filipiñana).
Let Us Play!!!
Identify the following embroidery tools and
materials.
Threader
a device for passing a
thread through the needle
and guides of a sewing
machine.
Embroidery Scissors
should be used only for cross
stitch and embroidery. Using
them to cut paper or other
material will make them dull
more quickly. Store scissors in
a sheath to keep the points
sharp.
Sewing Box
a container which is
designed to hold
sewing equipment
and accessories.
Stilleto
a small pointed
instrument with a
long handle and
blade, used in
decorative
needlework to
make holes.
Tape Measure
is a flexible
ruler used to
measure size
or distance.
Embroidery Needle
have a long eye
which makes
threading the
needle so much
easier when
using multiple
strands of thread.
Thimble
a small cover,
usually made of
metal or plastic,
worn to protect
the finger that
pushes the
needle when
sewing.
Fabric
cloth or other
material
produced by
weaving together
cotton, nylon,
wool, silk, or
other threads.
Gauge
used to mark
hems for
alterations as
well as intervals
between pleats
and buttonholes
and buttonhole
lengths.
Pin Cushion
holds the
straight pins
and needles
while. working
to prevent
accidents.
Let’s Think About it?
How was embroidery started?
What are the basic tools and materials in
embroidery?
If you will be asked to give the uses of each tool and
material in embroidery, can you do it confidently?
TOOLS Tools refer to small
or handy
devices/instruments
used in sewing while
materials or
supplies are those
that are consumed
in finishing a
project.
MATERIALS The key difference
between equipment
and materials is
that materials form
the actual product
and are the parts,
components,
ingredients and
raw materials that
become a part of
the product
whereas equipment
refers to the tools,
machinery, devices
that help create the
product.
Materials Required
for Embroidery
Fabric
This referred to cloth. The stitches used are
determined largely by the fabric available
and have also been dictated by the quality of
the woven fabric. Fabric came from a great
variety and they differ in material, weight,
weave, design, color, and finish.
Two main categories
of fabric
Even weave fabrics
Plain Weave Fabrics
Even weave fabrics
- refer to woven fabrics (cotton or
synthetic- can be rayon, polyester,
cotton, silk, wool, acrylic, linen or
mixtures of these and other fibers) with
same number of threads per inch in
both directions, so that they are woven
in a regular square grid.
- When working on even weave fabric,
stitches are usually done over two threads,
because there is a hole in the middle of the
stitch you can do the partial stitches in cross
stitch easily with even weave fabrics.
Plain Weave Fabrics
refer to woven fabrics in which
each thread is over one, under
one in both directions.
Different Fabrics in
Embroidery
Canvas
- has an open mesh construction and
thick thread is used to stitch over
these spaces.
- This is used for doing an embroidery
work known as needle point; it is also
suitable for cross stitch, tapestry and
other needlework projects.
- This is an even weave kind of fabric.
Aida
- is the number one choice for most beginner
embroiderer
- best thing about aida is that you can see
where your needle goes exactly, because the
cloth is woven with threads with small
spaces between them.
- This fabric is also known by the name Java
cloth.
- Aida is available in stitch counts of 11 count
to 22 count.
Fiddler’s cloth
- is an even weave fabric that
has a rough textured surface
which is very interesting.
- This cloth is available in 14
count, 16 count and 18 count.
Jobelan
is an even weave heavy fabric
which is a blend of cotton and
polyester and comes in a varied
thread count from 16 to 32
counts.
Hardanger
is a 100% cotton fabric with
22 thread count. It is a plain
weave and an even weave.
Cotton Muslin
is a plain weave fabric.
Muslin fabric starting with a
thread count of 70 going up
to 250.
Silk
is beautiful and hence a
choice fabric for
dressmaking and other
home décor.
TAKE NOTE!!!!
All fabrics should be prewashed before
using them for embroidery. The filler that
is used in the fabric can cause havoc if it
is not removed by washing prior to
working with the fabric.
Thread
A long, thin strand of cotton,
nylon, or other fibers used in
sewing or weaving. The thickness
of thread depends upon whether
the design is bold or delicate
Proper Care of Embroidery Thread
Store it properly under controlled conditions to avoid the following issues:
Thread dents
- when a cone falls onto the floor, the
point of impact can “dent” the
thread, resulting in a weak spot (or
spots) that can ultimately lead to
problems as the thread travels
toward the needle.
Discoloring and fading
—Threads
especially rayon, will fade when
exposed to sunlight for extended
periods of time. If your threads are
stored on a window sill or anywhere
that sunlight can strike them full force,
you risk fading and discoloring
Lint buildup
- Threads that sit out, exposed to the elements
of your shop’s environment, are prone to
dust and lint building up
- When the thread travels through the upper
thread path, it takes the crud with it,
dispensing it along the way onto critical
surfaces (such as tensioners) that need to
remain clean and smooth.
Brittleness
excessive exposure to sunlight can
dry out the thread and lead to
brittleness in the fibers.
Obviously, this will weaken the
thread and lead to excessive
thread breaks.
