EXPONENTIAL
NOTATIONS
At the end of the lesson the learners should be
able to:
a) Identify the parts of the exponential notations;
b) express and expand the given exponential
notation;
c) Observe accuracy while performing numbers to
the standard form
“There are 8 members of Wines family, they went
to SM shopping mall and buy some ballpen and it
cost of P8.00 each . How much did they pay, if
each of them bought 8 ballpens?”
1. What is the base of the problem?
2. What number should be the exponent?
3. Express the exponential notation to standard form?
What is EXPONENTIAL NOTATIONS?
It is another way of expressing numbers
It has two parts:
BASE : the number that is being multiplied repeatedly,
EXPONENT: the number that tells us how many times the BASE
is being multiplied.
Example: 63 exponential notation
6 base
3 exponent
How to read six to the third power/ six cubed
6 x 6 x 6 = 216 standard form
expanded form
All numbers has its invisible by exponent 1 when
a number has an exponent of 1, it is always equal
to the number itself.
Example:
51 = 5
351 = 35
71 = 7
• When a number has exponent of zero (0) it is
always equal to 1
Example:
70 = 1
110 = 1
30 = 1
• For 10 as BASE
Example:
105 = 10 x10 x 10 x10 x 10 = 100000
106= 10 x10 x 10 x10 x 10 x10= 1000000
107= 10 x10 x 10 x10 x 10 x 10 x10 =10000000
• the exponent is the same as the number of zero
in standard form
• Only for evaluating power of 10
Using table:
1. first, get the base and exponent of the given expanded form
2. Write the exponential notation using the base and exponent.
3. Write down the exponential notation through words in column
READ.
4. Lastly, get the standard form.
