Explain the various functions and meanings of modal verbs,
including expressing ability, possibility, permission, obligation,
necessity, advice, and prediction.
Recognize the nuances and differences in meaning between
different modal verbs in specific contexts.
OVERVIEW
This lesson covers the topics of:
Modal Verb and its variations
MODALS
Modal verbs refer to a specific group of auxiliary verbs that
play a crucial role in expressing various attitudes,
possibilities, obligations, capacities, prohibition,
probabilities, requests, suppositions and permissions.
They are commonly used in writing and speaking to convey
nuanced meanings and present information with precision.
MODALS
In sentence structure, modal verbs are not conjugated with additional
‘-s/-es’ at the end of the verb for the third person singular.
Structure
Subject + Modal Verb + Base Form of the Verb.
Subject + Modal Verb + not + Base Form of the Verb.
Modal Verb + Subject + Base Form of the Verb?
Example:
“She can swim in the sea.”
“They must not attend the class to understand the lesson.”
“May I come in, please?”
