The History of Tennis

From Medieval Origins to Modern Sport

Medieval Roots
Tennis originated from the medieval game
of jeu de paume, which was played in
France in the 12th century. It was played
with bare hands or gloves, and the ball was
struck with the palm of the hand.
Over time, the game evolved and rackets were introduced. The word
"tennis" comes from the French word "tenez", which means "take
heed" or "receive". The game became popular in England during the
16th century, and it was played by royalty and the nobility.
