Passive Manual Mobilization and Manipulation

Passive manual mobilization and manipulation involve small, rhythmic movements or single quick movements applied to joints by a physiotherapist to increase range of motion and joint stability, modulate pain, improve tissue repair, reduce inflammation and muscle tension, and facilitate further treatment. The physiotherapist positions the patient for relaxation and uses proper body mechanics to mobilize below the pain threshold in order to modulate pain, increase range of motion, improve tissue healing, and enable additional exercise therapy.

PASSIVE MANUAL MOBILIZATION

AND MANIPULATION
PRINCIPLES AND EFFECTS AND USES
MOBILIZATION OF JOINTS:
• Small repitative rhythmical oscillatory,localized
accessory functional movements.
• Performed by physiotherapist.
MANIPULATION OF JOINTS:
• These are accurately localized single quick
movement of small amplitudeand high velocity
completed before the patient can stop it.
PRINCIPLES:
• Position patient to achieve maximal relaxtion.
• Comfortably room temperature with patient
properly drapped.
• Confident,firm,comfortable hand hold.
• Articulate initially in resting positionand then
chase end range.
• Use good body mechanics.
• Allow gravity to assist.
• Short lever arms and hands as close to joint as
possible.
• Mobilize below the pain threshold.
• Our body and mobilizing part act as one unit.
• Avoid muscle guarding.
• Articulate in opposite direction if needed.
EFFECTS AND USES:
• Modulate pain
• Increase joint stability to stiff joints and range
of motion.
• Improve tissue repair.
• Improving tissue stability and extensibility.
• Reduce soft tissue inflammation.
• Reduce muscle tension.
• Induce relaxation.
• Facilitate movement and exercise therapy.
