The Physical Self

- considered body as the initial source of sensation and necessary for
the origin and maintenance of personality
- the body is subservient to the mind
Reich
- Mind and body are one and that all psychological processes are part
of physical processes.
The Sexual Self
- The most crucial aspect of human development
is the sexual self.
- It highlights biological and environmental factors
that shape sexual development.
The biology of Self
- at birth, the sexual genitals is a biological feature that distinguishes
males from females
- during puberty, observable changes in the human body
- when physiological changes are triggered within the adolescent’s
reproductive system, he/she is likely to experience sexual urges,
become more sensitive to sexual stimuli, and feel sexual arousal
- humans are likely to engage in sexual activities to satisfy sexual
urges.
Sexual Identity and
Gender Orientation
- Biological sex is one’s assignment upon birth and is dependent on
physical feature. Gender is an identity that is learned and embraced
by individual.
- Gender roles refer to societal expectations of how men and women
should act.

- Sexual identity and gender orientation underlie one’s concept of
self.
The Consequences of
Sexual Choices
- Sexual intercourse is the reproductive act in which the male organ
enters the female’s reproductive tract.
- Adolescents couples who engage in sexual intercourse are usually
overwhelmed by sensations they feel.
- If the woman is fertile during the time of intercourse, pregnancy is
likely to occur.
- Having a child entails a big responsibility and should not be a
consequence of an impulsive moment.
The Consequences of
Sexual Choices
- Aside from pregnancy, another consequence of impulsive and careless sexual
intercourse is the risk of acquiring sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs).

- Being guided by one’s personal beliefs and core
values.
- Being future-oriented.
Family Planning
- The main goal of family planning is to improve pregnancy
planning, spacing and unintended pregnancy.
- Methods
abstinence- no intercourse is seen as 100%
effective to avoid unintended pregnancy
contraceptives- IUDs, implants, hormonal
contraceptives
