Unit 1 – Creativity with Coding
Learning Intention: To understand and apply the different
strands of the Design cycle while developing an aesthetically
appealing and functionally effective digital design solution based on
the client’s requirements leading to innovation.
SOI: Developing an aesthetically appealing and functionally
effective digital design solution based on the client’s requirements
leads to innovation.
Problem : A client has less customer base due to lack of media
presence. Design a solution to help him resolve this problem.
Unit 1 – Creativity with Coding

Factual questions
•What are the principles of good aesthetic design or the elements that attracts you
as a customer in a webpage?
•What features of a company influence their webpage design choices? How does
the elements that we need to put in a webpage change depending on the client?
•Which computer tools/programs can we use to make a Digital design(webpage)?
Conceptual questions
•How do inventions impact our lives?
•How do form and functionality define ‘effectiveness’?
•How can we organise information and avoid all information to be cluttered
in one page?
Debatable questions
•Digital flyer or a webpage ? Why?
•What is the correct balance between form and function of a webpage? Is function
more important than form?
•Will a “One size fits all” webpage be useful for all types of clients? Give your
reasoning with examples?
Unit 1 – Creativity with Coding
Problem Statement : A client has less customer
base due to lack of media presence.
Design a solution to help him resolve this
problem.
How can we solve this by designing an effective (Related
concept – form & function) webpage for the client ?
We will go through different stages of the Design cycle to
1. The Design Cycle has 4
criteria or
objectives.Each
objective has 4 strands.
2. All strands are created
equally. We assess the
whole process, not just
the product.

Inquiring and Analysing
A i. explains and justifies the need for a solution to a problem for a client/ target audience
•What is the problem? Who are we solving it for? Where is the problem situated? Why is solving
this important?
•This should be directly linked to the statement of inquiry for the unit.
•In your own words, explain what the problem/issue/challenge/concern is
•In your own words establish context - exactly where is this situated?
•Identify the target audience/client/end-user
•Persuade the reader of your Criterion A report that this issue/problem is in need of a solution -
here are tips on how to persuade:
research - conduct some research and find and share statistics, quotes, graphs, images and
anything that can add weight to your argument
personal approach - discuss how important this issue is to you personally &/or to your
client and how finding a solution is so very important and much needed
provide reasons - use the word "because"
prognosticate - share how bad the world will be if this problem is NOT solved - compare a
happy world with a solution to a horrible world without a solution
Inquiring and Analysing – Explain & justify the need
Problem Statement : Your client does not have a digital
presence and therefore less customer base. Design a solution
based on the client’s requirements.
Activity 1 : Write down the explanation for the above problem
using the following command terms :
TERM DEFINITION
State Give a specific name, value or other brief answer without explanation or
calculation.
Outline Give a brief account.
Explain Give a detailed account including reasons or causes.
Justify Give valid reasons or evidence to support an answer or conclusion.

0 The student does not reach a standard described by any of the
descriptors below.
1–2 The student states the need for a solution to a problem
3–4 The student outlines the need for a solution to a problem
5-6 The student explains the need for a solution to a problem
7–8 The student explains and justifies the need for a solution to a problem
Inquiring and Analysing – Explain & justify the need
State: the client(farmer/school) does not have a digital presence and hence requires a
webpage. (Give a specific or brief answer (1-2 lines) without explanation)
Outline: the client (farmer/school) has less customer base due to lack of digital presence. He
needs to have a webpage for his company to disperse information about his products(Give a
brief account or summary without explanations or reasoning)
Explain: the client (farmer/school) has less customer base due to lack of digital presence. He
needs to disperse information about his products to all. A webpage will be the best solution
because it can communicate all the information about his products and services and has a
wider reach and functionality compared to a digital flyer or a newspaper. This will therefore
help him gain lot of customers (Give a detailed account (3-4 lines) including reasons or causes)
Justify: the client (farmer/school) has less customer base due to lack of digital
presence. He needs to disperse information about his products to all. I feel a webpage
will be the best solution because it can communicate all the information about the
products and has a wider reach and functionality compared to a digital flyer or a
newspaper advert. This will therefore help him gain lot of customers as they can buy
the products from the webpage .It will serve as a platform to promote his product
amongst his other competitors. Studies have showed that modern retailers who use
their small business website as a tool to connect with customers online achieve an
average growth of 15-50%
If we do not develop a webpage solution for the farmer, he will not be able to sell
his seasonal vegetables and fruits on time and they will rot and get spoilt. He will
incur lot of losses and his business may have to eventually shut down and he will lose
his means of livelihood. (Give a valid reasons or evidence to support an answer or
conclusion)

A ii. States and prioritizes the main points of research needed to develop a solution to the
problem, with minimal guidance
Create a long list of research topics - then change these ideas into research questions using the
MYP command terms - think what data and information is needed to be collected so that you
can solve the problem?
Identify a variety of places to find answers and collect data (primary, secondary, qualitative
and quantitative research)
Consider that you have to solve this problem with minimal guidance from your teacher - what
do you need to know and where would you find it?
Prioritise HIGH - MEDIUM - LOW and add "because" to justify your classification

All primary research is carried out by the student, who collects his or Secondary research involves using data
her own data. collected by other people.
Examples include: Examples include:
conducting interviews, surveys and polls with a target audience analysing data from a website or book
and/or client reading accounts of a problem written
interviewing experts over the telephone by another person
writing letters or emails asking for specific information about a analysing articles in magazines, journals
product from a client and newspapers
observing users interacting within the situation and making notes downloading data from a marketing
analysing products that have things in common with the problem website
investigating the work of other designers of existing products viewing videos about how to use
conducting market research such as surveys, questionnaires and materials, tools and processes
interviews through focus groups

Analyse existing products
A iii. analyses a group of similar products that inspire a solution to
the problem
There may be a wide range of products that solve similar problems to the
one assigned. Before beginning to develop a specification and designs,
students need to identify existing products that solve a similar problem,
could partially solve the problem or could give ideas on how to solve the
problem. Students will need to employ a range of strategies to analyse
these products, such as SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats), PMI chart, use ACCESSFM, etc.

iv. develop a detailed design brief which summarizes the
analysis of relevant research.
Write a summary of the collected research, which tie together the
findings from the student’s research and how it will affect the project.

DESIGN BRIEFDESIGN BRIEF
•Scenario :
ATL Skill: Thinking skill
•The client has less customer base due to lack of media presence.
• For the above scenario, by now you would have collected a lot of information, data and observations that requires analysis and summary. You will now
present this in the form of a design brief.
Present your design brief in a series of paragraphs keeping in mind the following points :
Briefly explain your design goal (what do you hope to create, how will it solve your client’s problem)
Who is your target client and briefly describe what his/her needs are (from your interview)
How did you go about collecting information that you needed about the product?
From your secondary research, what elements will you include in your solution, what elements will you avoid and list some interesting elements you have
thought of to make your design unique.
What major constraints do you foresee in achieving your goal?
Reflect on your journey from the start of criterion A till now.
The design brief should :
p resent information concisely
explain how and why the information is relevant to solving the
problem
link to research (i.e.cite key elements in your design brief)
revisit Ai and address the key elements
identify a clear goal "I will design..."
who is it for "for ...."
why "to solve..."
