BOD CALCULATION

BOD
• BOD measure the amount of DO required by aerobic organisms to
break down organic materials present.
• The rate of the oxygen consumption depends on the temperature, pH,
microorganisms and the type of organic materials in water.
COMPUTATION OF BOD
• Example 1
• What is the % of BOD removal in a plant when the influent BOD is
245mg/L and the effluent BOD is 22mg/L?
• Efficiency = (influent – effluent)/influent x 100 = 245 mg/L –
22mg/L/245mg/L X 100 = 91%
• Example 2
The BOD test results were recorded as follows:
• Initial sample of DO which is 8, 1mg/L
• DO after 5 day which is 2,1 mg/L
• Volume of the sample in 300ml bottle is 60 ml
• Calculate the BOD in 5 days
• BOD mg/L = initial DO – residual DO/volume of the sample x 300ml = 8,1mg/L – 2, 1
mg/L/60 ml x 300 ml = 30mg/L
• Example 3
• Assume the following seed BOD sample were collected from a plant, the volume used
were 5 ml, initial DO were 8,6mg/L and DO after 5 days was 5, 8 mg/L. the reference
sample was also recorded as follows: initial DO was 8,7mg/L and the final DO was 4,
8mg/L. calculate the seeded BOD
• BOD seeded = D1 –D2/sample volume x 300ml

• D2 = depletion of seed

= initial DO for seed sample – final DO/sample volume

= 8,6mg/L – 5,8mg/L/5ml = 0, 56mg/L
• D1 = initial DO for reference sample – final DO

= 8,7 mg/L – 4, 8mg/L = 3, 9 mg/L

• BOD seeded = D1 –D2/sample volume x 300ml

= 3,9mg/L – 0, 56mg/L/5 ml x 300ml = 200, 4mg/L

• Example

• BOD = D1 – D2/P = volumetric friction of the wastewater

• Assume you have added 5ml of wastewater into a 300ml BOD flask.
Where the initial DO concentration is 8 mg/L and the DO after 5 days
is 2mg/L. calculate the BOD.
• P = sample volume/300 ml BOD flask= 5/300 = 0, 0167

• BOD = D1 – D2/P = 8mg/L – 2mg/L/ 0, 0167 = 359mg/L

• Example
• BOD 5 day using different temperature = L (1 – 10 –kt)
• Where k is the rate constant depending on the waste stream (for domestic waste is 0, 1)
• L is the original concentration of biodegradable organic material
• t = is the time
• T is temperature
• Assume the BOD5 @ 20oC is 200 mg/L and the k value @ 20oC is 0, 1. Determine the
BOD3 @ 36oC.
• BOD 5 day using different temperature = L (1 – 10 –kt)
• 200mg/L = L (1 – 10 – 0,1 x 5) = 292, 5 mg/L

• k @ 36oC = k @ 20oC (1, 047)T-20
• = 0, 1 (1, 047) 36 – 20
• = 0, 209
• BOD3 @ 36oC = L (1 – 10 –kt)
• = 292, 5 (1 – 10 - 0, 209 x 3)
• = 223, 46 mg/L
• Example
• Assume the following BOD load:
• K1 = 0, 3
• K2 = 0, 9
• L = 30 mg/L
• Cs = 8, 0 mg/L (DO saturated concentration
• tc = 2, 5 days
• Calculate the minimum concentration of DO.
• 8,0mg/L – Cmin = (0, 3/0, 9) 30 mg/L e – 0,3 x 2,5

• Cmin = 3, 27 mg/ L
