O. HENRY
Pseudonym of William Sidney Porter.
Born on September 11,1862 in
Greensboro, North Carolina, during the
American Civil War.
His parents were Algernon Sidney Porter, a
physician, and Mary Jane Virginia Swaim Porter.
He left school at the age of 15 and then had a
numerous jobs, including Bank Clerk.
In 1896 he was accused of embezzlement.
He was sentenced to 5 years in jail.
While in prison, he began writing short
stories in order to support his young
daughter Margaret.
Most of his stories settings happened in
New York because he is fascinated in
this place which he called “ Bagdad-on-
the-Subway.
He feature working class characters,
such as Policemen and waitresses, as
well as criminals and social out casts
These are the other pen name he used
including:

Also known as nouvelle.
A piece of prose fiction that can be typically read
in one or single sitting.
It is a fiction but sometimes it is based on the true
story.

Refers to the way a writer arranges
incidents in a short story so that every
incident in a story becomes the result of
the previous one.
The basis of cause and effect as the story
moves through time.

1.EXPOSITION
- it is the introduction stage of the story.
- it is the start of the novel, drama or film.
- the writer introduces the setting
- the writer gives the reader as much
background information as possible.
- this enable the reader to understand
the coming events as they unfold.

2. RISING ACTION
- it involves the incident that create a
build-up to the climax.
- the reader is introduced to the
conflict.
- prepares the reader for the most
exciting part of the climax.

3. CLIMAX
- refers to the most exciting part
stage of the narrative
- it is the peak of emotions
it is where the conflict gets so intense.
- it is the moment of decision for
protagonist
- turning point of the narrative.

- prepares the reader for conclusion.
- this is where the writer tells the
reader about all the actions and
reactions that happen as a result of
the events in the climax before the
resolution or ending.

- issues that create the conflicts
are resolved.
