The teaching of Good Manners, Right Conduct
and Values have been reinstated as a law. This simply means that these subjects are very important and its implementation must be seen beyond the books and the classrooms. Good manners and right conduct (GMRC) is a basic behavior code restored through Republic Act 11476, the Character Education/Good Manners and Right Conduct (CE/GMRC) Act of 2020 source: www.manilatimes.net With its restoration, Values Education (VE) will be taught in Grades 7 to 10 as a separate subject with the same time allotment as other core subjects. The GMRC has been on a come and go. Effective School Year 1991-1992, the same GMRC was added as a learning area in the elementary school curriculum. The VE Framework was strengthened by the thrust of "Bayan Muna Bago ang Sarili." CE/GMRC was allotted 30 minutes daily from Grades I-VI using Filipino as the medium of instruction. This was provided by DO 90, s. 1991 – Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) at the elementary level. However, in 2013 upon implementation of the K-12 curriculum, GMRC was removed. Good Manners, Right Conduct and Values are necessary for everyone to get along in our world. These reflect the children’s upbringing and education. Therefore, it is everyone’s responsibility to teach these to children. Parents and teachers must work together in encouraging children to show courtesy and empathy towards others. Manners come easily to some children while others struggle. Some parents teach good manners better than others. Therefore, it is crucial for teachers to effectively instill these in children especially since most of them are now being sent to school (6 hours) at very early ages. In teaching Good Manners, Right Conduct and Values, it is a must to use polite words and to model the manners that are being taught. It is also very important to correct the mistakes immediately without shaming the child especially infront of other people. In other words with love, & grace, not with judgment & condemnation. Please keep in mind to never make the child an example to be embarrassed. It is critical that polite words and tones (how you say it) are used in pointing out the mistake and the focus should be more on how to do better next time. In other words, the purpose why we correct, is to let our students, & children feel our deep concern, and that they are important, and loved still despite of their imperfections & lapses. Do you remember how Jesus processed the Adulterous Woman brought to Him by the group of scribes & pharisees in the bible? (John 8:1-11) Teachers must acknowledge what children bring into the discussions and they must always treat children with dignity and respect as human beings created by God same with us (Teachers), and others around us. We should bear in mind, that we as Teachers, are also vulnerable or prone to commit mistake and have weaknesses also (week spots). Its all by-products of God’s amazing and abundant grace.
