Module 4 THE MOLE CONCEPT

1. The document discusses the mole concept and how to use it to express the mass of substances and determine percentage composition of compounds from their chemical formulas. 2. Key aspects covered include Avogadro's number as a conversion factor between number of particles and moles, calculating molar mass from chemical formulas, and using the formula mass/molar mass to calculate the number of moles from mass. 3. Worked examples demonstrate calculating number of moles, molar masses of compounds, and percentage composition from chemical formulas.

THE M O L E C O NC EP T

MODULE 7 AND 8
LEARNING COMPETENCIES

• USE THE MOLE CONCEPT TO EXPRESS MASS OF THE

SUBSTANCES; AND
• DETERMINE THE PERCENTAGE COMPOSITION OF A
COMPOUND GIVEN ITS CHEMICAL FORMULA AND VICE
VERSA.
MOLE
Avogadro’s Number
Remember!
When to use atoms, ions or molecules?
Avogadro’s number as a
Conversion Factor
Sample Problem 1
How many molecules are there in 4.0 moles of CO2?

to answer this question you have to consider this:

1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 particles
 thus, using dimensional analysis approach, you will be able to convert number
of moles to its equivalent amount in the number of particles.
Sample Problem 2
How many moles are there in 3.01 X 1023 atoms of
calcium?
MOLAR MASS

• The Mass of 1 mole (in a.m.u.)

• Equal to the numerical value of the average atomic mass
• 1 mole of C atoms = 12.0 a.m.u
• 1 mole of Mg atoms= 24.3 a.m.u
• 1 mole of Cu atoms = 63.5 a.m.u
Other Names Related to Molar Mass
How to Calculate for Molar Mass?

H– 2 X 1 g/mol = 2 g/mol
O- 1 X 16 g/mol = 16 g/mol
Molar mass = 18 g/mol
Calculate the Molar Mass

1.Sulfuric acid, H SO
2 4

2.Aluminum hydroxide, Al(OH) 3

The Molar Masses Of The Compounds Listed Below

THE MASS-MOLE RELATIONSHIP
The Number Of Moles Is Computed By Dividing The Mass Of The Substance By Its Atomic Mass (If
Element) And Molar Mass (If A Compound. Mathematically, Written As:

• If Substance Is An Element
no. of moles = Mass of substance or by using symbols n = __Mass____
atomic mass at. mass
• If Substance Is A Compound
no. of moles = mass of substance or by using symbols n = __mass____
molar mass mol. mass
SAMPLE PROBLEM 1
How many moles are in a 48 gram Mg atom? Mg = 24 amu
Given : mass Mg = 48 g
atomic mass Mg = 24 g/mol or 24 amu
Required : no. of moles, n
Solution :
formula : n = mass
at. mass
n = ___48 g ___
24 g/mol or amu
n = 2 mol Mg
SAMPLE PROBLEM 2

How many moles are in 174g NaCl

Given : mass NaCl = 174 g
molar mass NaCl = 58 g/mol or amu (compute for molar mass)
Required : no. of moles, n
Solution :
Formula : n = __mass____
mol. mass
n = ___174 g ___
58 g/mol or amu
n = 3 mol NaCl
