INTRODUCTION :

 Bamboo has a long and well-established tradition as a building material through out
the world’s tropical and sub-tropical regions.
 It is widely used for many forms of construction, particular for housing in rural areas.
 Bamboo is a renewable and versatile resource, characterized by high strength and low
weight and is easily worked using simple tools.
GENERAL USES :

 Bamboo has many uses mainly in construction like flooring, roofing, designing and
scaffolding.
 Bamboo is used to make musical instruments, paper, cloths, furniture, durable utensils,
toys medical purposes.
 Small scale and cottage industries for handicrafts and other products.
 New generation products as wood substitutes.
 Industrial products.
PROPERTIES :

 Tensile strength
 Compressive strength
 Elastic modulus
 Anisotropic properties
 Shrinkage
 Fire resistance
THE WORKING OF BAMBOO
 SPLITTING : The cane is split in halves and quarters and then driven apart by a edge. It
can also be split with a knife frame into four or eight segments.
 Shaping : Even though bamboos are naturally circular in form but if they are grown in a
box of square shape they acquire a shape as desired.
 Bending : Bamboos can be bent while they are freshly cut by heating them above the
temperature of 150° C. Bamboo will retain this shape even after cooling and drying off.

PRESERVATION OF BAMBOO
A thorough treatment of Bamboo is required to protect it against insects and rot before it
is put into use.
 Chemical method : Commonly a mixture of Borax and Boric acid are utilized for
this purpose.
 Traditional method/Non-chemical method : Another procedure generally employed
is to boil cut bamboo to remove the starches that draw insects.
BAMBOO FOR FOUNDATIONS
 There is very limited use of bamboo as foundation material because when in contact with moisture
laden surface they decay fast.
 The various types of foundations constructed with bamboo are :
a)Bamboo is in direct with ground surface.
b)Bamboo fixed to rock.
c)Composite bamboo
d)Bamboo piles
WALLS CONSTRUCTION WITH BAMBOO
 Bamboo is extensively used for construction of walls and partitions.
 Beams are the main element constructed
with bamboo provide structural frame-
work for walls.
 They positioned in a way to be able to
withstand forces of nature.
 An infill is used between framing
elements to add strength and stability to
the walls.
ROOFING & SCAFFOLDING WITH BAMBOO
• Bamboo is one of the best roofing materials and provides ample sturdiness to the structure.
• It is proven shield against forces of nature or animals and
are considered as light weighted.
• Due to advantageous properties of bearing heavy load,
bamboos are considered as one of the best materials for
scaffolding and even for tall structures.
• For the construction of scaffolding, cane extensions
are obtained by lashing cane ends using several
ropes.
ADVANTAGES :
 Light in weight and strong
 Cost efficient and easy to use
 Environmental friendly
 Self renewing resource
 Fast growing and highly productive
 Recyclable
 Higher tensile strength than steel
 Earthquake and hurricane resistant.
DISADVANTAGES :
 Requires preservation.
 Shaped by nature.
 Lack of design guidance and codes.
 Structural efficiency is low.
 Prone to catch fire very fast.
 Various techniques of jointing are involved.
 Less durable material.
 Bamboo doesn’t bear weight width-wise.
CONCLUSION :
 Since time immemorial, bamboo has played an important role in the development of
mankind.
 It is used for a wide range of day-to-day purposes, both as a woody material and as
food.
 It has been the backbone of much of the world’s rural life’s and will remain so as the
population increases.
