Diesel Fuel Systems
The main components of the fuel system in diesel engine are: (1)
fuel filter (2) fuel lift pump (3) fuel injection pump (4) atomizers
and (5) high pressure pipe.
Fuel lift Pump (Feed Pump or Transfer Pump) It is a
pump, which transfers fuel from the fuel line to the
fuel injection pump. It is mounted on the body of
fuel injection pump. It delivers adequate amount of
fuel to the injection pump.
FUEL INJECTING PUMP It is a pump, which delivers
metered quantity of fuel to each cylinder at
appropriate time under high pressure.
Fuel Injector: It is the component, which delivers
finely atomised fuel under high pressure to the
combustion chamber of the engine.

The combustion chambers described in the
following
Direct Injection Combustion Chamber and Indirect
Injection Combustion Chamber
Direct Injection Combustion Chamber
no glow plug(preheating element) only main
combustion chamber
Indirect combustion chamber has glow plug and
two combustion chamber(main and pre
combustion chamber),
• Swirl chamber
– in which compression swirl is generated

Two types of Injection pump
1. Inline Type Fuel Injection Pump
Each element contains a plunger, a barrel, and
a delivery valve all placed in a single row in a
casing made in three parts.
4
2. Distributor Type Injection Pump
a single unit, made up of a supply pump,
governor, and injection pump.

COOLING SYSTEM
The Purpose of Cooling System
Prevent Overheating
Excess Heat generated in
enginePeak temperatures
exceed melting point of
metal
Regulate the most efficient
Temperature
Regulate Temperature
Allow engine to warm up
in cool weather
Maintain engine in
optimum range. 6
Consequence of Engine Running too Hot:
Pre-ignition
Detonation/Knock
– All result in very high pressure rise and
possible damage to engine
Heat Fatigue of components
Burnt Pistons
Burnt Valves
Failure of lubrication system
Oil breakdown
Oil film at cylinder destroyed at 200C
Scoring of piston & sleeves
Warping & fracture of components
7
Consequence of Engine Running too Cold:
Unnecessary Wear
Poor Fuel Economy
Incomplete Combustion
Lower coolant Temperature
More energy transferred out of cylinder
Energy from is wasted & not available for
work (Power)
Promotes corrosive conditions in engine
Types of cooling System
There are two types of system in general
Liquid or indirect cooling system
Air or direct cooling system

Lubrication System
Function of
Lubrication
To reduce friction and wear
between the moving parts
To provide sealing action
To cool the surfaces by
carrying away the heat
generated in engine
components
To clean the surfaces by
washing away carbon and
metal particles caused by
wear
