Machineries on board
MACHINERY ON BOARD
The machinery on board a ship can
be divided roughly into 2 categories,
namely:
• Main Engine Propulsion
• Auxiliary Machinery
• Main, or propulsion
Main engine engines are used to turn the
ship's propeller and move the
ship through the water. They
typically burn diesel oil or
heavy fuel oil, and may be
able to switch between the
two. There are many
propulsion arrangements for
motor vessels, some
including multiple engines,
propellers, and gearboxes.
There are basically two types of
Main Engines, namely:
• Diesel Engines
• Steam Turbines
Diesel engine
The diesel engine is an internal
combustion engine in which
ignition of the fuel which is injected
into the combustion chamber is
caused by the elevated temperature
of the air in the cylinder due to
mechanical compression.
Steam Turbine
On ships, the steam turbine can
also be used as a direct propulsion
plant, in which, the turbine shaft is
connected to propeller shaft of the
ship. Since the speed will be in
thousand rpm, reduction gears and
reduction systems are used to get a
drop in propeller rpm.

Auxiliary Machinery
Auxiliary marine machinery includes
pumps, compressors, and blowers for
circulating fuel and the fresh water and
seawater used in cooling systems, for
supplying air to the starting system of
the main engine, for cooling refrigerated
holds, and for air-conditioning various
parts of the ship and for refrigeration ...
Auxiliary Machinery provides:
• Comfort
• Smooth Operation
• Personnel Safety
Oil Purifiers
Oil purifiers are used on board ship to
condition fuel oil and lubricating oil. The
fuel oil used on ships is normally very thick
and viscous at normal
temperatures. It is called Class
C Marine Bunker oil. It contains
alot of impurities too.

distillation process. Using the
heat from the engines, the
seawater is evaporated into
vapor. This vapor is then led
into a cooling section and it
condenses into water again -
distilled water. The cooling
section consist of tubes or
plates which uses sea water
as the cooling agent.
Boiler
A steam generator, boiler on a
ship, It uses high-pressure
superheated steam from the
main steam supply used for
propulsion, and uses this to
generate low pressure saturated
steam.
Provision Refrigeration
• The refrigeration plants on merchant
vessels play a vital part in carrying
refrigerated cargo and provisions for the
crew on board. In reefer ships, the
temperature of the perishable or
temperature sensitive cargo such as food,
chemical, or liquefied gas, is controlled
by the refrigeration plant of the ship.Dec

Air Compressor
It is used for producing compressed
air, which has a number of applications
on board, both in the engine and deck
departments.
