What is a clause?
Definition:
  A clause is a part of a sentence, or a group of words, which has a subject and a verb. In
some cases a clause can form a complete sentence.
A simple sentence has one independent
clause

 I was standing near a wall.

Independent Clause or
Main Clause
A main clause is a clause that contains a subject and a verb.
They make sense on their own.

•"I like ice-cream" is a simple sentence made of a main clause.


•"I like ice-cream and I like chocolate" is a compound sentence
made up of two main clauses/ independent clauses
I like ice-cream , and I like chocolate

 2)  Subordinate Clause
or Dependent Clause
A subordinate clause contains a subject and a verb but it depends on the main clause
for making sense as it does not make complete sense on its own. It starts with a
subordinate conjunction.

1. Go to sleep as soon as you finish. (as soon as you finish.)

2. Before I go to school , I have breakfast.


3. When you go back , please call me.
4. I know who ate the pizza.
5. The pencil that I bought yesterday is out of stock now.
6. I took a two-day leave because I needed some rest.

dependent clause, use a
comma after the clause as
shown in the example

1) Each student will have an index card with either an independent
or a dependent clause.
2) There is only 1 correct match for your card, so read and choose
carefully.
3) On the teacher’s cue, students will get up and walk around the
classroom to find their match.
4) Students who have found their match should sit down.
5) students who haven’t found their match should remain standing.
6) Review the answers as a class.
