Classification of Plants and

Animals
GRADE 6
Importance of classification

 It provides support in favor of evolution.

 It takes a short period for the understanding of organisms.

 It suggests us ways of giving scientific names to the organisms.

 It shows natural relationship of organisms.

 It makes the study of organisms easier and scientific.

Plant Kingdom
Animals Fun Facts: Did you know?

 ALL CLOWNFISH ARE BORN MALE—SOME TURN FEMALE TO ENABLE

MATING.
 ANTEATERS DON’T HAVE TEETH.
 NINE-BANDED ARMADILLOS ALWAYS GIVE BIRTH TO IDENTICAL
QUADRUPLETS.
  CATS CAN'T TASTE SUGAR. THEY DON'T HAVE SWEET TASTE BUDS.
 THE AFRICAN PENGUIN IS ALSO COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS THE
"JACKASS PENGUIN" BECAUSE IT MAKES DONKEY-LIKE BRAYING
SOUNDS.
 BIRDS ARE IMMUNE TO THE HEAT OF CHILI PEPPERS.
Animals Fun Facts: Did you know?

 SMALL DOGS USUALLY LIVE LONGER THAN LARGER BREEDS

 GIRAFFES AND RATS CAN LAST LONGER WITHOUT WATER THAN
CAMELS
 SCORPIONS GLOW UNDER ULTRA VIOLET LIGHT
 ANTS STRETCH WHEN THEY WAKE UP IN THE MORNING
 ISAAC NEWTON INVENTED THE CAT DOOR
 FOR EVERY HUMAN THERE ARE 200 MILLION INSECTS
 BATS ARE THE ONLY MAMMALS THAT FLY
 CROCODILES ARE COLOUR BLIND
Animals Fun Facts: Did you know?

 CAMEL'S MILK DOESN'T CURDLE

 FROGS CAN'T SWALLOW WITH THEIR EYES OPEN
 DRAGONFLIES HAVE 6 LEGS BUT CAN'T WALK
 A CROCODILE CAN'T MOVE ITS TONGUE
 AN ELEPHANTS EARS ARE USED TO REGULATE BODY TEMPERATURE
 A GROUP OF FROGS IS CALLED AN ARMY
 A GROUP OF OWLS IS CALLED A PARLIAMENT
 A CATS URINE GLOWS UNDER A BLACKLIGHT
Animal Kingdom
What is the difference
between vertebrates and
invertebrates?
Sub-Kingdom: Invertebrata

 lack backbone or vertebral column

 divided into nine phyla.

 all the unicellular organisms are included in protozoa while the

multicellular organisms are in metazoan.
Phylum: Protozoa

 small and microscopic animals ; unicellular organisms.

 excretion and respiration take place by general body surface or by contractile vacuole.

 commonly move with the help of pseudopodia, cilia or flagella

 body is naked or bounded by a pellicle.

 examples: amoeba, paramecium, euglena, plasmodium etc.

Amoeba Bacteria

Pramecium Euglena
Phylum: Porifera

 do not move from place to place (sessile)

 most of the sponges are marine except spongilla.

 two types of openings in their body. Small pores (ostia) and large (osculum)

 presence of sponging fibre, calcium and silicon make rigid and strong.

 both asexual and sexual reproduction occurs in sponges.

 examples: sycon, spongilla, euspongia etc.

Animals Fun Facts: Did you know?

 ONLY THE MALES ARE CALLED PEACOCKS. FEMALES ARE CALLED

PEAHENS
 CAPUCHIN MONKEYS PEE ON THEIR HANDS TO WASH THEIR FEET.
 TIGERS HAVE STRIPED SKIN AS WELL. EACH PATTERN IS AS UNIQUE AS A
FINGERPRINT.
 . SEA OTTERS HOLD HANDS WHILE THEY'RE SLEEPING SO THEY DON'T
DRIFT APART.
 ANIMAL BEHAVIORISTS HAVE CONCLUDED THAT CATS DON'T MEOW AS
A WAY TO COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER. IT'S A METHOD THEY
USE FOR GETTING ATTENTION FROM HUMANS.
Phylum: Coelenterata

 bodies of coelenterates are hollow and tubular cavity called coelentron.

 mouth serves for both ingestion and egestion of food.

 mouth is surrounded by tentacles; help in locomotion and capturing of prey

.
 examples: hydra, obelia, jellyfish, corals etc.
Hydra

Jelly fish
Animals Fun Facts: Did you know?

 HONEYBEES CAN GET SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES.

 BALD EAGLES SOUND SO SILLY THAT HOLLYWOOD DUBS THEIR VOICES.
 FEMALE BATS GIVE BIRTH WHILE HANGING UPSIDE DOWN, CATCHING
THE BABY IN THEIR WINGS AS IT DROPS.
 DESPITE THEIR LACK OF VISIBLE EARS, PENGUINS HAVE EXCELLENT
HEARING.
 SPIDERS ARE ARACHNIDS AND NOT INSECTS
 A GIRAFFE CAN CLEAN ITS EARS WITH ITS 21 INCH TONGUE
Animals Fun Facts: Did you know?

 BULLS CAN RUN FASTER UPHILL THAN DOWN

 THE BONES OF A PIGEON WEIGH LESS THAN ITS FEATHERS
 MOST BIRDS EAT TWICE THEIR BODY WEIGHT EACH DAY
 SNAKES CAN'T BLINK
 DOLPHINS CAN KILL SHARKS BY RAMMING THEM WITH THEIR SNOUT
 SHARKS CAN SENSE A DROP OF BLOOD FROM 4KM (2.5MILES) AWAY
 YOU CAN TELL THE SEX OF A HORSE BY ITS TEETH (MOST MALES HAVE 40,
FEMALES 36)
 WHEN 2 ZEBRAS STAND SIDE BY SIDE THEY USUALLY FACE EACH OTHER IN
OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR PREDATORS
Phylum: Platyhelminthes

 flat worms are soft and flat either leaf-like or tape-like.

 head is provided with hooks and suckers.

 have mouth but no anus in their alimentary canal.

 hermaphrodite as their body contains both male and female reproductive organ.

 usually parasites but few of them are free living.

 examples: liver fluke, tapeworm, etc.

Tapeworm

Liverfluke
Phylum: Aschelminthes or
Nemathelminthes
 body of round worms is cylindrical and unsegmented.

 body is covered with thick cuticle.

 digestive system is complete with mouth and anus.

 circulatory and respiratory systems are absent.

 examples: roundworm, hookworm, pinworm etc.

Roundworm

Hookworm
Differences between male
and female ascaris?
Phylum: Annelida

 animals are cylindrical, segmented and elongated.

 have moist skin through which they respire.

 locomotory organs are called setae or parapodia.

 digestive system is complete, having mouth and anus.

 usually hermaphrodite while a few of them are unisexual.

 examples: earthworm, leech etc.

Earthworm

Leech
Phylum: Arthropoda

 head, thorax, abdomen

 Exoskeleton; compound eyes

 Life cycle four phases

 Four classes
I. Crustacea- 5 pairs, Example: prawn, crab, lobster
II. Insecta- 3 pairs, Example: termite, bee, mosquito
III. Myriapoda- many pairs, Example: centipede, millipede
IV. Arachnida- 4 pairs, Example: spider, scorpion
Phylum: Mollusca
 soft bodied

 body divisible into head, visceral mass and foot

 Unisexual

 example;: snail, octopus, slug etc.

Phylum: Echinodermata

 spiny skin

 no distinct head

 tube feet for locomotion

 example: starfish, sea urchin, sea lily etc.
