Gemba walk
 Gemba

Gemba  is a Japanese term meaning "the real place."

Japanese police could refer to a crime scene as Gemba, and TV


reporters often refer to themselves as reporting live from Gemba.

In business, however, Gemba refers to the place where value is


created. 

The most common use of the term is in manufacturing, where


the Gemba is the factory floor.

In lean manufacturing, the whole point of Gemba is that problems in a
business process or production line are often easily visible, and the
best improvement come from going to 'the real place', where leaders
can see the state of the process for themselves.

1. Pick a Theme:
• This will help you focus all your efforts and be effective.
• You may choose theme such as productivity, cost efficiency, safety etc.

2. Prepare your team:


• The team should be prepared for Gemba walk.
• All team members need to have a clear understanding about the
objective/theme of the Gemba walk

3. Focus on the process, not on people:
• The Gemba walk is not the time to evaluate your team’s performance.
• The main purpose is to observe, understand and improve the process.

4. Be where the value stream is:


• Following the value chain will give you the best opportunities to identify areas
with high potential of abnormalities.

5. Record your observations. Don’t make suggestions during the walk:
• Write down everything that grabs your attention
• Leave the analysis for later.
• You will be much more precise when you have all the facts available.

6. An extra pair of eyes:


• It may be good to invite colleague from another department
• Someone with totally different daily tasks may have a fresh perspective

7. Follow up
• Even if you don’t find anything significant during your Gemba walk, you need
to share with the team what you’ve learned or seen.
• If you are going to take action after walk, inform the team about upcoming
changes and why they are necessary.

It is required to have a checklist before you go for Gemba walk based
on your theme to focus and target your efforts.
 Post Gemba Walk

Before you take any action based on your Gemba walk observations,
you will need some time to organize your thoughts and notes.

It is a meeting held after each Gemba walk that may include a few
participants from different departments.

The main purpose is to have as many as different point of views as


possible to make the best decision.
