What is ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION?
Atmospheric pollution or air pollution is
contamination of the air by smoke, gases from
vehicles, factories and power plant.
This pollution can cause disease, kill plants, and
damage structures.
Causes
Emission from industries and manufacturing activities
waste in cinerators, manufacturing industries, and power plants emit
high levels of carbon monoxide, organic compounds, and chemicals
into the air.
petroleum refineries also release a lots of hydrocarbons into the air
Burning fossil fuels
• cars and heavy duty trucks, trains, shipping
vessels, and airplanes all of these
transportation burn lots of fossil fuels to
work
• emissions from automobile engines is the
major cause of pollution and very difficult
to manage
• fumes from car exhaust contain dangerous
gases such as carbon monoxide, oxides of
nitrogen, hydrocarbons and particulates
• fumes from car cause great harm to people
who breath them and also react with
environmental gases to create further toxic
gases
Household and Farming Chemicals
crop dusting, fumigating homes, household
cleaning products or painting supplies, pest
killers, fertilizer dust emit harmful chemicals
into the air
when use these chemicals without or with
little ventilation, we may fall ill if we breath
them
EFFECTS
Accidification
cause harm to vegetation and buildings
acid rain formed when sulphuric acid combines with the water droplets that
make up clouds. then, the water droplets become acidic
acid rain falls can kill trees and harm animals, fish, and other wildlife,
destroys the leaves of plants, changes the chemistry of the soil, changes the
chemical of the lakes and streams that the rainwater flows into
Eutrophication
rain can carry and deposit the nitrogen in some
pollutants on rivers and soils
it will adversely affect the nutrients in the soil
and water bodies
can result in algae growth in lakes and
waterbodies, and make conditions for other
living organism harmful
Ground-level Ozone
chemical reactions involving air pollutants
create a poisonous gas ozone (O3)
O3 can affect people's health and can damge
vegetation types and some animal life
Steps to reduce the pollution!
1. Save energy around the house
2.Cut back on the amount of packaging you
purchase and the amount of household
waste produced
3.Reduce the amount of time spend in the
car
