Role of Hydrology in Water Resources
Planning and Management in the Philippines
Introduction
• Hydrology is a science that deals with the processes
governing the depletion and replenishment of water resources
of the land areas of the Earth, and treats the various phases of
the hydrological cycle.
• Water resources are natural resources of water that are
potentially useful. Uses of water include agricultural,
industrial, household, recreational and environmental
activities. All living things require water to grow and
reproduce.
What is Water Resources Planning and
Management?
• It is making the most of all your water resources.
• Water resource management is the activity of planning,
developing, distributing and managing the optimum use of
water resources. It is a sub-set of water cycle management.
Ideally, water resource management planning has regard to all
the competing demands for water and seeks to allocate water
on an equitable basis to satisfy all uses and demands.
What is the role of hydrology?
• Hydrology is responsible in helping and supporting the
department (DENR) in executing successfully it's main
functions towards a nation free from flood through coastal
engineering, rehabilitation and river management, urban
drainage engineering and flood mitigation.
• The basic role of hydrology, which is fundamental for water
resources management, is the accurate definition and control
of the water balance for different space and time increments.
In order to have a
manageable unit for
comprehensive planning of
water resources
development, the National
Water Resources Board
(NWRB) has divided the
Philippine country into 12
Water Resources Region
(WRR’s).
Water Management Challenges in the
Philippines:
• Fragmentation of water agencies
• Lack of science-based data and information for effective
planning and decision making
• Depletion of water availability and quality
• Rapid urbanization and industrialization
• Indiscriminate land use and development
Water Management Challenges in the
Philippines:
• Increasing volume of solid wastes, pollutants, and hazardous
wastes
• Unabated extraction of groundwater
• Inadequate Sewerage and Sanitation facilities
• Watershed Degradation
• Inadequate water infrastructure facilities
