PHILIPPINE

FESTIVALS
Mr. Jenezon P. Cardenio
What is A
Festival?
Festival
A festival is an event
ordinarily celebrated by a
community and centering
on some characteristic
aspect of that community
and its religion or cultures.
AKLAN-ATI-ATIHAN
 Kalibo, Aklan (3rd weekend of January)
 The Sto. Nino festival started it all.
 Originally a pagan festival from this tribe
practicing animism, and their adoring
their anito god.
KADAYAWAN
 Davao City (3rd week of august)
 Comes from “Madayaw” – a friendly
greeting which means good or beautiful.
MARINDUQUE
 Boac, Gasan and Mogpog, Marinduque
(Holy Week)
 Morion is the helmet worn by the
centurions while Moriones refers to the
costumed penitents reenacting the search
for St. Longinus, hunted by his fellow
centurions for converting to Christianity.
SINULOG
 Cebu City (3rd weekend of January)
 It can be recalled that early Filipinos
worshipped Anitos an other creatures or
natures. So, when Magellan landed on the
Visayan region and claimed it in the name of
Spain, he introduced Christianity and gave
the natives the image of the Santo Nino.
 Dancers move to the sound of the drums
and this resembles the current (sulog) of
what then known as Cebu’s Pahina River.
BICOL-IBALONG
 October 25-31 every year.
 Legazpi City, Albay
 Ibalong – which detailed the myths and
legends of the area long before the
colonizers came.
BATANGAS - SUBLIAN
 23rd of July is deep-rooted in the
Batanguen0os’ devotion to the town’s
patron: The holy Cross in Bauan and
Agoncillo, and the Sto. Nino in Batangas
City.
