Automatic Identification System

Automatic Identification System (AIS) is designed to automatically provide identification and tracking information about ships to nearby ships and coastal authorities. AIS uses VHF radio to broadcast and receive data such as a ship's identity, position, course, and cargo. International regulations require certain ships to carry AIS to support safety of navigation and environmental protection. Onboard, an AIS system consists of antennas, transmitters, receivers, processing units, and interfaces to collect and transmit static, dynamic, and voyage-related data to support vessel tracking.

AIS

– Are designed to be capable of providing information and identification about

the ship to other ships and to coastal authorities automatically.
– AIS uses Very High Frequency transporter to communicate
Carriage of AIS onboard ship

– IMO Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea Chapter V Regulation 19 – Carriage
requirements for Shipborne Navigational Systems and Equipment requires that:
- SOLAS Chapter 5, Regulation 19 requires AIS to be fitted on certain ships
through a phased implementation period spanning from 01 July 2002 to 020 July
2008.

The regulation provide;

- provide information including the ships’ identity
- receive information
AIS Overview

An AIS message contains

- ship identification
- length, breadth, type of ship
- course and rate of turn
-draft, cargo
- position
- speed
- ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival)
Components of AIS

– Person (Stakeholder) – operates the system

– Data – gathered data
– Established procedures – managing and storing data
– Software (ERP) – processed data
– Information System Infrastructure – allows AIS to perform its function
– Internal Controls – safe guards the data
Onboard AIS consists of:

– Antennas
– 1 VHF transmitter
– Multi-channel VHF receivers
– 1 channel 70 VHF receiver for channel management
– Central processing unit
– GNSS
– Interfaces to leading and some devices
AIS Technical Description

– Operates primarily on two dedicated VHF channels (AIS 1 – 161.975 MHz/

Channel 87B and AIS 2 – 162.025 MHz/ Channel 88B)
– Is capable of automatically switching to alternative channels
