SOCIAL LEGISLATION

GSIS Mandate
 Created by Commonwealth Act No. 186 and
Republic Act No. 8291 (GSIS Act of 1997)
 GSIS is a social insurance institution that
provides a defined benefit scheme under the
law.
 It insures its members against the occurrence of
certain contingencies in exchange for their
monthly premium contributions
GSIS Mandate
 GSIS members are entitled to an array of social
security benefits, such as life insurance benefits,
separation or retirement benefits, and disability
benefits.
 GSIS is also the administrator of the General
Insurance Fund by virtue of RA 656 (Property
Insurance Law)
MEMBERSHIP Coverage
The GSIS covers all government workers
except:
 Members of the Judiciary and Constitutional Commissions
who are covered by separate retirement laws;
 Contractual employees who have no employee-employer
relationship with their agencies;
 Uniformed members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines
and the Philippine National Police, including the Bureau of
Jail Management and Penology and the Bureau of Fire
Protection.
 Does not include: Barangay and Sanggunian officials who
are not receiving fixed monthly compensation
 Does not include: Employees who do not have monthly
regular hours of work and are not receiving fixed monthly
compensation
BENEFITS AND SERVICES
The principal benefit package of the GSIS consists of:

 compulsory and optional life insurance


 retirement
 separation
 employee’s compensation benefits
Corporate Social Responsibility
The GSIS’s corporate citizenship efforts focus on
education, environmental protection, cultural
promotion, disaster preparedness, and outreach –
all creating more opportunities for GSIS employees
to give back to society.
Education
 GSIS Scholarship Program (GSP)
A total of 400 college scholars, consisting of children or
dependents of GSIS members with the lowest salary are
selected under the GSIS Scholarship Program (GSP). Under
GSP, GSIS will shoulder the scholar’s actual cost of tuition and
miscellaneous fees not exceeding Php40,000 per academic
year. GSIS has also raised the monthly allowance to Php3,000
from Php2,000.
 Adopt-a-School Program (ASP) and Support to
Brigada Eskwela
ASP provides P200,000 worth of assistance to selected public
schools in the country’s poorest provinces or low-income
municipalities to meet their most urgent needs. The aid usually
comes in the form of support to physical facilities and
technology.
ENVIRONMENTAL CARE AND
PRESERVATION
 Tree Planting
The GSIS’s Green Program is the pension fund’s simplest share
in the society’s environmental initiatives.
A move closer towards a greener and healthier Philippines,
tree planting has been a priority government thrust in line with
the National Greening Program (NGP) under Executive Order
No. 26

 Coastal Cleanup
GSIS employees have consistently volunteered in cleaning
Manila Bay of crash and rubbish. The activity aims to increase
environmental awareness, promote recycling, and gather
information for the development of environment-friendly
packaging.
THE GSIS ART COMPETITION

 The GSIS Art Competition seeks to create a venue to


recognize aspiring artists.

 Since 2004, the competition has evolved from


selecting three best entries each under the
Professional and Student Categories to
acknowledging first, second, and third prizes for
Representational, Nonrepresentational, and
Sculpture Categories.

 To date, the competition attracts as many as 500


entries across the country.
