Solid Waste Treatment

Namli is a small town in Ratlam district, Madhya Pradesh with around 9,756 residents. The municipality received an award from HUDCO to implement a solid waste treatment project from 2011-2014. They aimed to properly manage solid waste and improve sanitation in accordance with government rules. The municipality partnered with an NGO to establish waste collection infrastructure, segregate waste, convert biodegradable material to manure and plastic to bricks, raise awareness, and overall improve waste management and the cleanliness of the town.

SUMMARY
Namli is a small town of distric Ratlam (M.P.)
The municipality with a strong commitment
decided to make the town clean and green.
The activity to comply with the municipal solid
waste management and handling rules 2000.
The responsibility of management of the
complete process was shared by the ULB with an
NGO Indian Gramin Services Bank

ESTABLISHMENT OF PRIORITIES
The major goal of their practice is to comply with
the SWM and handling rules 2000 and to improve
sanitation condition to provide clean and green
environment for the citizen of the town.
The treatment process includes conversion of
waste to organic manure and plastic (and
polythene)to bricks respectively.

OBJECT AND STRATEGIES


Provision of adequate machinery, equipment and
staff for the project.
Up gradation of existing SWM infrastructure.
Door to door collection of municipal solid waste.
Segregation of waste at source.
Collection and transportation of waste for residential
areas and markets and vehicles having alarm system.
Primary and secondary storage bins.Public awareness
for better sanitation/waste management.
Treatment of the segregated waste converting into
the organic manure and plastic bricks.

SITUATION PRIOR TO INITIATIVE


The financial position of ULB was not strong.
Lack of solid waste management.
Lack of municipal sanitary staff.
Lack of machinery and equipment available with
the ULB.
Lack of awareness among the citizen.
Lack of waste treatment measures.

Solid wastes are any discarded or abondoned
materials. waste can be solid, liquid or semi solid.

RESULT ACHIEVED
The plant converting the collected waste into
organic manure.
This practice will also increase the income of the
ULB by selling the manure which is converted by
organic material.
The plants converted the plastic and polythene
into plastic bricks.
Improve the door to door collection and revenue.
Improve the environmental condition
