1. Introduction
The Department of Computer in the Faculty of Applied Science at Trincomalee Campus,
Eastern University, Sri Lanka is serving the nation by producing highly marketable computer
science graduates through their well-equipped laboratories since 2014.
The department presently has one laboratory, well equipped and furnished. The main aim is
to provide hands-on training experiences specific to course objectives as directed by the BSc
in CS curriculum.
This laboratory manual is designed to assist the user in handling the computer laboratory
environment where the students can learn and apply practical skills and instructors can guide
them with proper study skills and measure the student performance and competency.

1.1. Vision of the Department


Formation of Highly Intellectual Capital to the Computer World.

1.2. Mission of the Department


Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Trincomalee Campus
aims to provide highly marketable dynamic Computer Technological Graduates through
suitable teaching and learning environments.

1.3. Objectives of the Computer Laboratory


 Reinforce learning through practicing Computer lab procedures.
 Provide hands-on training experiences specific to course objectives as directed by the
curriculum.
 Prepare the undergraduates before the introduction to software development.
 Offer independent student learning opportunities.
 Promote research attitude through accommodating dedicated PCs.

2. Responsibilities of the personals
2.1. Head of the Department
1. Ensure that all safety protocols and guidelines are followed.
2. Ensure that all laboratory equipment is properly maintained and calibrated to
ensure accurate results and prevent accidents.
3. Ensure the stock levels are adequate, monitoring expiration dates, and disposing
of expired or damaged items.
4. Providing ongoing training opportunities to keep staff up-to-date with current
technologies and industry trends.
5. Ensure that the laboratory complies with all relevant regulations and guidelines,
including those related to safety, environmental protection, and ethical
considerations.

2.2. Computer Instructors


1. Maintain the details of conducted Practical Sessions.
2. Uphold the student discipline inside the laboratory.
3. Provide an instruction sheet to the students, for each software/tool used in the
practical session.
4. Supports students who require additional assistance with learning Computer Lab
skills.
5. Creates course outlines and writes instruction and review hand-outs for each of
the different courses.
6. Supervises use of computer equipment during lab hours.
7. Provides timely lab support to faculty, staff and students.
8. Recommends solutions to continuously improve lab operations.
9. Assists in the development and maintenance of teaching materials.
10. Observes and reinforces safety and housekeeping procedures and protocol
within the lab.

2.3. Technical Officer – Computer (TO)


1. Provides user, software, and hardware assistance.
2. Supervises student use of computing equipment and ensures that lab guidelines
are followed; develops instructional materials for the use of lab hardware and
software.
3. Performs periodic backups of network services, troubleshoots and repairs lab
network problems, and notifies technicians of inoperative equipment.
4. Administers lab computer networks, maintains printers, supplies, and queues.
5. Gathers usage statistics and prepares reports.
6. May assemble new or modified equipment such as servers, workstations,
routers, switches and systems.
7. Receives, installs, maintains and assists with ordering of lab equipment and
supplies.

8. Prepare the lab before the examination as per the need.
9. Assists with inventory control.
10. Observes and reinforces safety and housekeeping procedures and protocol
within the lab

2.4. Lab Attendant (LA)


 Observes and reinforces safety and housekeeping procedures and protocol
within the lab.
 Open and close the computer lab as per the practical schedule
 Be punctual for the duty.
 Switch on the lab power and air conditioners before opening the lab. Air
conditioners must be maintained at the right temperature.
 Maintain the lab clean.
 Maintain the students' access record book and practical record book at the lab.
 Maintain the arrangement of computer towers, monitors, keyboards, mice and
chairs in order at all times of the day.
 Ensure minimum noise level at the lab other than practical hours.

3. Rules and Regulations


3.1. Students
 Consuming food and beverages within the computer lab is prohibited.
 Students are allowed to work on the designated computers only.
 Changing the current hardware and software configuration is prohibited. Do not
unplug the power cables of the devices.
 Playing games on the computer in the lab is strictly prohibited.
 Internet facility is only for educational/ study purposes.
 Do not access non-educational sites that do not comply with the university rules.
 Silence must be maintained in the lab at all times.
 Lab timing be as per the academic timetable of different classes
 Mobile phone use is not permitted in the labs. Turn off or set to vibrate all mobile
phones when using the computer labs.
 Pay attention to the Instructor/ teacher during the practical session.
 Behaviour and activities that disturb other students or disrupt the operations of
the lab are not allowed.
 Keep off your footwear out of the lab.
 Students should leave their bags on the rack before entering the computer lab.
 Students are allowed to bring a notebook, pen, and wallet inside
 Should sign on the Student Access Book while entering the Computer Lab and
also at the time of exit from the lab.
 Before leaving the lab, students must log off from their logins.

 Students are not allowed to use personal Pen Drives, CDs, DVDs etc., in a
Computer Lab.
 Charging personal mobile devices like phones, tablets e.t.c from computer lab
USB ports is prohibited.
 If any problem arises, please bring the same to the notice of the lab attendant
(LA) or technical officer (TO).
 Students are not allowed to work in a laboratory alone or without the presence
of a lab attendant (LA) or technical officer (TO).

3.2. Do’s
 Do your work quietly.
 Put your chair back in place before leaving.
 Keep the computer lab tidy and clean always.
 Keep password secret.
 Organize your files neatly for easy retrieval.
 Wear mask if necessary.

3.3. Don’ts
 Do not open the Lab curtain/windows.
 Do not move aimlessly in the computer lab.
 Do not smoke in the computer lab.
 Do not delete any files you are not sure of their originality.
 Do not copy the work of other students.
 Avoid stepping on electrical wires or computer cables.

4. Documents and Records


4.1. Lab Practical Record Book
The cover page of the report should contain;
 Name and the Registration number of the student
 Name of the department
 Name of the faculty
 Name of the University
 Course Code and Course Title
The body of the report should contain;
 Date of the laboratory/practical session
 Title of the practical
 A statement of the problem or task
 The plan/method/algorithm
 Program/Coding
 Testing/Observation/Output
 Conclusion/Discussion on Output
 Date and Signature of the Instructor

4.2. Student Access Record Book
 Maintained by the Lab Attendant
 Students who want to access the computer lab other than the practical session in the
timetable must sign on the Student Access Record Book

4.3. Event Log Book


 Maintained by the Lab Attendant
 Every event (Practical Session, Workshops, Seminars, etc.) occupied the computer lab
should be recorded by the LA and get the signature from the person-in-charge
(Practical Session, Workshops, Seminars, etc.)
