OPENING PRAYER
To begin, may we ask for guidance from our Father. Let us pray the Louisian Prayer.
O God, wellspring of goodness and blessings, we give you thanks and praise as one Louisian
community. The graces You incessantly grant upon us and Your divine providence have
sustained our beloved University throughout the years of mission and excellence.
Having been founded by the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we pray that You
keep us committed and dedicated to our mission and identity to serve the Church and the
society as we become living witnesses to the Gospel values proclaimed by Jesus. For if we are
steadfast in our good and beautiful mission, our works will bring success not only to ourselves
but also to those whom we are bound to love and serve.
Inspired by St. Louis our Patron Saint, who was filled with a noble spirit that stirred him to love
You above all things, may we also live believing that we are born for a greater purpose and
mission as we dwell in Your presence all the days of our life.
Grant all these supplications through the intercession of Mother Mary and through Christ our
Lord. Amen.

Information
● Information is the communicated knowledge or intelligence.
● These are knowledge obtained from investigations, studies, experiments, research, and
instructions.

Information is the data that has been collected, processed, and interpreted to be
presented in a usable form. In media world, information is often used to describe knowledge of
specific events or situations that has been gathered or received by communication, intelligence,
or news reports.
We encounter different data, events, and experiences from our day-to-day activities
these are the fundamentals that we process to create meaningful information to sought different
learnings.
Information Literacy
● Information Literacy are the set of skills that requires individuals to recognize when
information is needed and can locate, evaluate, and effectively use the needed
information.
● The set of abilities of an information literate are most notably used and seen in situations
that requires decision making, problem solving, and acquisition of knowledge.
Information Literacy is your skill to recognize when an information taken from various
media is needed and can locate, evaluate, and analyze if the information is factual or not and
you are able to use the information efficiently and effectively to attain your goals and objectives.
● You need to identify the nature and extent of an information to clearly define the
different key concepts, the extensive access to information will result to an
effective search technique.
2. Access the needed information effectively and efficiently
● Information once used effectively can promote problem solving and critical
thinking skills, in this way learners can achieve maximum productivity.
3. Evaluate information and its sources critically
● Evaluating information encourages you to think critically about the reliability,
validity, accuracy, authority, timeliness, point of view or bias of information
sources. It is always a must to evaluate information.
4. Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base
● This is one of the trait that an information literate individual must possess where
selecting information carefully must be evident. A good example is that when
teachers set the desired learning outcomes for what the learners can achieve at
the end of their topic/lesson.
5. Use information to effectively accomplish a specific purpose
● Learning is like problem solving, we create problems at the same time create
solutions to create specific knowledge.
6. Understand the economic, legal, and social issues that surrounds the use of information
● We need to understand the different context that surrounds every information
because this information has their purpose on why they existed, we now live in
the era where different information can be access easily in a blink of an eye we
must be vigilant in every way of gathering and using information.
7. Access and use information ethically and legally
● In using the gathered information there are several rules that we must consider,
just like copyright infringement, plagiarism, misinformation, terms & agreements.
A good example is that, maybe you have experienced this before:
o I uploaded a video in Facebook the audio of my video after uploading was
muted by the system in a reason that the audio file has its copyright and
there was no proper acknowledgement seen in the process of using the
audio file.
o Another is that your essay was copied word by word and your teacher
found out because of application that he/she uses to check plagiarism.
Transport, Health, Food, Social, Entertainment, Arts & Music, Community, Language,
News, and many more.
We need information every day, it is one of the most important entities that we use in our
everyday lives, we need information to compute how much we will pay whenever we eat in a
restaurant, we need information to process different ideas, we need information on how to
properly address a problem, we need information to know the right way in visiting unfamiliar
places, and more.
This may sound familiar to you, the word “marites”. In some cases, we coined the term “marites”
whenever we want to know something about an event or person promptly. We are also term as
“chismoso & chismosa” because of our intent to know what is about the certain content.
This is an example of our urge to what we call information need, but as we have discussed
there are things that we are bound to do and not to do with regards of information. We should
and always be careful on the different information that we have in ourselves.

6. Equal opportunities among citizens are important. One of the ultimate benefits of
information literacies to help to close the gap between the information poor and
information rich (digital divide)
7. Information literacy is required for democracy
8. Information literacy is a prerequisite for participative citizenship, social inclusion, and the
creation of new knowledge, personal empowerment and learning for life
These are the five components of Information Literacy that we need to consider
whenever we are looking for the different information we need. Applying these set of rules will
lead us in understanding the nature and probable uses of different information, thus it will also
contribute to the process for us to become an Information Literate Individual.
1. IDENTIFY - an Information Literate Individual can identify the nature and extent of an
information.
How do we identify possible sources of information?
You can identify possible sources of information in these different areas:
● Library Catalogs
● Article Databases
● Reference Resources
● Search Engines
● Websites
● Archives
2. FIND – an Information Literate Individual can find the needed information effectively and
efficiently.
How do we find the identified sources of information?
● Find and read the general information contained in an encyclopedia, dictionary, or
textbook for each of your keywords.
● Use the bibliographies and sources in everything you read to find additional sources of
information.
● Search periodical indexes at your local library.
● Search the Internet to get information from an organization, society, or online database.
● Broaden your search by adding words to your search phrases in search engines. Narrow
your search by subtracting words from or simplifying your search phrases.
These are the things that we need to consider whenever we are evaluating information.
This is a must since the main purpose of information is to inform. We do not like that we are
spreading fake news and misinformed information to the mass media.

I. Citing
A. Why cite?
1. To give credit to those whose work you have used (whether by direct quote or by
paraphrasing).
● Academic ethics require that writers be credited for their work and their
writing.
● If you intentionally or unintentionally use the work of another without giving
proper credit, you have plagiarized.
1. When to cite.
● When using other people's words, put quotes around the words and cite
your source.
● When paraphrasing other people's words, cite that source.
● When you've borrowed an idea from someone else, cite them.
A. What is Plagiarism?
● Plagiarism is the accidental or intentional use of someone else's ideas or work
without properly citing the author. Whether accidental or intentional, the
consequences are the same. It is your responsibility to understand and avoid
plagiarism.
● Plagiarism means using someone else’s work without giving them proper credit.
In academic writing, plagiarizing involves using words, ideas, or information from
a source without citing it correctly.
III. Copyright
What is Copyright?
https://www.elegantthemes.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/featured-how-to-copyright.png
● Copyright refers to the legal right of the owner of intellectual property. In simpler terms,
copyright is the right to copy. This means that the original creators of products and
anyone they give authorization to are the only ones with the exclusive right to reproduce
the work.
● Copyright is a type of intellectual property that gives its owner the exclusive right to
make copies of a creative work, usually for a limited time. The creative work may be in a
literary, artistic, educational, or musical form.
Fair Use for Copyrighted Materials
Fair Use - means you can use a copyrighted material without a license but only for certain
purposes. These includes:
● Commentary
● Criticism
● Reporting
● Research
● Teaching
4. Effect of your use on the market – this is also considered because most of the
copyrighted material intent is to gain profit.
Weaker Case Stronger Case
● Deprives creator of income ● Does not impact creator's income
