Subject: Prospective PhD student
Dear Professor Benjamin Sautter ,
I am writing to express my interest to fill a PhD position in“ Understanding agriculture and water resources
interactions at a large scale through hydrological modelling” .
I have completed the Master’s program in Hydraulic Engineering, Addis Ababa University ,Institute of
Technology in 2014. I see this as an excellent opportunity to not only advance my career as an Hydraulic
Engineer and researcher but also to apply the knowledge I have gained towards sustainable environmental
based solutions for environmental health. Additionally, I hold a degree in Water supply and Environmental
Engineering from ArbaMinch University, which is well known for its institute of water education.
The four-year Bachelor of Science in Water supply and Environmental engineering program
formed the foundation of my knowledge and understanding of the natural environment. As part
of the program, I studied various aspects of water science and engineering, including engineering
hydrology, fluid mechanics, geotechnical engineering, geology, water supply & sanitation, water
quality, drainage engineering, construction/civil engineering design and introduction bases &
computer programming.
The Master of Science in Hydraulic Engineering provides me with both the knowledge of water
management processes and the skills necessary to apply improved hydrologic modelling tools. I
learned about the importance of green infrastructure and nature-based solutions to sustainable
environment in order to ensure sustainability. This is something that I pay close attention to as
one of my top research interest.
In addition, I was a part-time lecturer at Unity University, Civil Service University and Hope
University Collage, Ethiopia .
I am personally driven by and interested in exploring the impact of geological structures on
costal contamination and eutrophication using multidisplinary approach with practical
applicability and the concept of environmental sustainability and nature-based solutions which
are of a great importance to me.
I see this position as a significant step in my career as I seek to apply knowledge and research
to the development of real-world solutions for the betterment of the wider community.
I understand that the main quality quantified to the success of the overall PhD program was the
quality of the researchers selected. With that said, I assure you of my strong work ethic, attention
to the quality of work I produce, and my willingness to be part of and support a multidisciplinary
team. In addition, I recognize the need for effective and efficient communication in all stages of
a project, from its development to its implementation and, finally, its end-user acceptance. To
that end, I have already undertaken an academic writing and research courses to grasp the
fundamentals, and I am more than willing to advance this and others top pursuing to explore the
impact of geological structures on costal contamination and eutrophication using multidisplinary
approach. And it is my hope that my skills; experience in hydrological modelling and advanced
analytical techniques : University lecturer experience; with the overall academic performance
satisfy the admission requirements and I eagerly look forward to the research.
Sincerely,
Muluken Melesse Sugamo (Mr.), MSc, BSc
