Motivation Letter

To the Admissions Committee

ETH Zurich University

Dear Members of the Admissions Committee,

I am writing to express my deep aspiration to gain a master’s degree in environmental

science at ETH Zurich. Growing up in Ethiopia, I have saw immediate the extreme
environmental and socio-economic challenges posed by urban river pollution in rapidly
growing cities. My academic, professional, and personal experiences have fueled a
deep commitment to addressing these challenges through innovative, sustainable
solutions. I firmly believe that ETH Zurich, with its exceptional reputation in
environmental research and interdisciplinary education, is the ideal institution to help me
achieve my goals of reclaiming Ethiopian urban rivers and fostering sustainable urban
ecosystems.

Personal Background and Inspiration

I was born and raised in a small rural village in Ethiopia, where rivers were not only a
vital resource but also symbols of harmony between communities and nature. These
pristine waterways supported agriculture, drinking water, and biodiversity. However, my
move to Addis Ababa for higher education introduced me to a starkly different reality.
Rivers in Ethiopia’s urban centers have become heavily polluted by untreated industrial
waste, domestic sewage, and urban runoff. Many of these waterways are now
blackened, lifeless streams that pose serious public health risks and threaten local
ecosystems.

What particularly struck me was the reliance on these contaminated rivers for urban
agriculture. The vegetables consumed by urban residents are grown using water from
these rivers, leading to significant public health risks. Studies have highlighted alarming
levels of heavy metal contamination and microbial pathogens in these vegetables,
contributing to diseases and long-term health concerns. Additionally, projections indicate
that Addis Ababa could face a complete depletion of groundwater reserves within 30
years if current trends continue. These environmental crises demand urgent,
scientifically grounded interventions.

My upbringing instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility to protect natural

resources and improve community well-being. These values have driven my academic
and professional journey and have inspired my aspiration to study environmental
science at ETH Zurich.

Academic and Professional Journey

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Urban and Regional Planning with great
distinction from Addis Ababa University. During my undergraduate studies, I developed
a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of urban development, environmental
sustainability, and public health. My thesis focused on urban street sociability, examining
how urban design could enhance walkability and social interaction while preserving
green spaces. This experience honed my analytical skills and introduced me to the
complexities of integrating environmental considerations into urban planning.

After graduating, I joined the Ethiopian Engineering Corporation (EEC) as an Urban

Planner. This role allowed me to work on projects addressing the environmental impacts
of urbanization, such as the Hawassa Lakeside Development, which aimed to balance
urban growth with the preservation of water bodies. I also contributed to the Chaka
Smart City project in the mountainous areas of Addis Ababa, focusing on
environmentally conscious urban design. These projects reinforced my passion for
integrating ecological principles into urban planning.

However, my work also revealed the limitations of current approaches in addressing

urban river pollution in Ethiopia. While I have gained practical experience, I recognize
the need for advanced scientific knowledge and innovative tools to develop sustainable
solutions. This realization has motivated me to pursue a master’s degree at ETH Zurich.

Why ETH Zurich?

ETH Zurich stands out as a global leader in environmental science and sustainability
research. Its interdisciplinary approach and cutting-edge facilities provide an
unparalleled environment for studying complex environmental challenges. I am
particularly drawn to ETH Zurich’s focus on water systems, ecosystem services, and
sustainable urban development—fields directly relevant to my research interests.

Switzerland’s success in maintaining pristine urban rivers serves as a compelling model

for Ethiopia. Swiss cities have demonstrated how integrated water management, robust
policy frameworks, and community engagement can restore and preserve urban
waterways. By studying at ETH Zurich, I hope to learn from these best practices and
adapt them to the Ethiopian context, where socio-economic constraints and rapid
urbanization present unique challenges.

ETH Zurich’s emphasis on practical applications of research is another factor that

resonates with me. I am eager to collaborate with faculty and peers on projects that
address real-world environmental problems. The opportunity to participate in fieldwork,
laboratory experiments, and interdisciplinary discussions will provide me with a
comprehensive understanding of environmental science.

Research Interests

My primary research interest lies in the restoration and sustainable management of

urban rivers in Ethiopia. I aim to explore the following key questions:

1. What are the primary sources and impacts of pollution in Ethiopian urban
rivers?

2. How can lessons from Swiss urban river management be adapted to the
Ethiopian context?

3. What role can urban agriculture play in reclaiming polluted rivers while
ensuring food safety?

4. How can sustainable groundwater management be integrated into urban

planning to prevent depletion?

I plan to focus on the intersection of public health, urban agriculture, and ecosystem
restoration. My goal is to develop scalable models for urban river reclamation that
prioritize public health, support sustainable agriculture, and enhance biodiversity.
One potential avenue of research is the application of nature-based solutions, such as
constructed wetlands and riparian buffers, to filter pollutants and restore river
ecosystems. Additionally, I am interested in investigating the socio-economic benefits of
river restoration, such as improved public health outcomes and enhanced recreational
spaces.

Long-Term Vision

Upon completing my master’s degree, I intend to return to Ethiopia and lead efforts to
reclaim urban rivers. My vision is to establish an interdisciplinary research center
dedicated to urban environmental restoration, bringing together experts in
environmental science, urban planning, and public health. This center would serve as a
hub for developing innovative solutions and training the next generation of
environmental scientists and planners.

I also aspire to work with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and

local communities to implement evidence-based policies and programs. By promoting
community involvement and raising public awareness, I hope to foster a sense of
shared responsibility for protecting urban rivers.

ETH Zurich’s program will equip me with the knowledge, skills, and network needed to
realize these ambitions. I am particularly eager to contribute to Ethiopia’s progress
toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those
related to clean water, sustainable cities, and ecosystem restoration.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my academic background, professional experience, and personal passion

have prepared me to excel in ETH Zurich’s Environmental Science program. I am
inspired by the opportunity to learn from world-renowned experts and to contribute to
the university’s mission of advancing sustainability.

I am confident that ETH Zurich will provide me with the tools to address Ethiopia’s
environmental challenges and to make a meaningful impact on urban river restoration.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute
to and grow within the ETH Zurich community.

Sincerely,
