READING (20 points)
Read the text and answer the questions below. (20 points)
The hippopotamus is a huge animal. It’s bigger than a horse or a cow. Some hippopotamuses
weigh 4,500 kilograms, or more! There are only two bigger land animals – elephants and white
rhinoceroses.
The hippopotamus – sometimes called a hippo – lives near lakes or rivers in Africa and stays in
the water all day. Hippos don’t like the hot African sun, so they stay happy and cool in the water.
You can often see a hippo’s ears, eyes and nose above the water. In the evening, hippos leave their
lake or river. They then walk – sometimes up to five kilometres – to find food. Hippos are
herbivores and they love fruit. Hippos can’t see well, but they hear and smell very well. They can
hear fruit fall from a tree. Then their nose helps them find the fruit.
Do you think a big, fat hippo can run fast? Well, it can. Hippopotamuses can run faster than
people! You shouldn’t go near a hippo or its territory. They become angry, and they can be
dangerous. They’ve got a huge mouth and big teeth, too. And they’re very strong.
1. What two animals are bigger than hippopotamuses?
…………………… and ……………………
2. What do hippos do during the day?
................................................................................................................................................
3. Why do hippos keep their ears, eyes and nose above the water?
