Skills Taught
The Infant and Preschool Aquatics Program (IPAP) is offered for children twelve months through three years of age. All participants will be accompanied by a parent/guardian. This program is not designed to teach children how to swim or even to survive in the water on their own. The emphasis is on having fun and preparing for swimming readiness as the child gets older. The objectives for Level 1 are to learn basic personal water safety information and skills, to help participants feel comfortable in the water. At this level basic aquatic skills are taught (front/back assisted floats, kicking actions, gliding, bobs and more. The objectives for Level 2 are to teach fundamental skills that will be used throughout the swim lesson programs. Swimmers will be taught to float without support, and will begin to move through the water independently. The objectives for Level 3 are to build on previously learned skills taught by providing additional guided practice. At this level they will begin to swim the freestyle/front crawl and elementary backstroke on their own. The objectives of Level 4 are to develop the swimmers confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills. Swimmers continue to learn new strokes: side-stroke, back stroke/crawl, and will start to develop the breast-stroke and butterfly. The basics of flip turns will be explored as well.
The objectives of Level 5 are coordination and refinement of strokes. Participants refine their performance of all the strokes (freestyle/front crawl, back stroke/back crawl, butterfly, breast-stroke, elementary backstroke and s idestroke) and increase their endurance and distances. Flip turns are introduced as well.
