Activity Title: LAYERS OF THE EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE
CONCEPT NOTES: (Copy the Activity Title & Concept Notes in your Science Notebook)
The atmosphere of the earth can be divided into four layers based on temperature. It is thickest near the surface
and thins out with height until it eventually merges with space.
    1. TROPOSPHERE - 1st layer above the surface, contains ½ of the atmosphere. Weather occurs here. Atmosphere
here is slightly unstable. Temperature decreases with altitude.
    2. STRATOSPHERE – 2nd layer, atmosphere here is stable and ozone layer is found here. Temperature increases
       with altitude (height).
    3. MESOSPHERE – 3rd layer, and where meteors burn up while entering the earth. Temperature decreases with
       altitude.
    4. THERMOSPHERE – 4th layer, the layer with auroras and where space shuttle orbits. Temperature here increases
with height. It’s the layer which is first exposed to the sun, air here is thin. It includes a region that is filled with is
       thischarged particles named IONOSPHERE.
    5. EXOSPHERE – 5th and last layer where it merges into space.

Activity Title: What’s Going On?
CONCEPT NOTES: (Copy the Activity Title & Concept Notes in your Science Notebook)
Greenhouse effect – way in which heat is trapped close to earth’s surface by “greenhouse gases.”
Greenhouse gases – heat-trapping gases that’s thought of as a blanket wrapped around earth, keeping the planet
hotter that it should be. It occurs naturally & are part of atmosphere’s makeup.
Example of greenhouse gases: water vapor, methane, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide,
                          Chloroflourocarbons (CFCs), and ozone.
     Sources of Greenhouse gases includes:
                       Transportation
                       Electricity production
                       Industry
                       Commercial and residential
