INSTALLATIONS AND OPERATIONG INSTRUCTIONS FOR SIMPLEX
FILTER/STRAINER.
I. GENERAL:
Simplex filters have a casing designed to meet the current regulations for a particular
range of pressures. The filter elements are designed with an appropriate safety factor for
the differential pressure quoted on the filters name plate. The maximum differential
pressure for filters with filter mesh is 0.8
Simplex filters are used in cases where the plant or the filter can be isolated by stop
valves for cleaning or the filter elements.
II. INSTALLATIONS:
When the filter is fixed to its foundation or pipeline filter casing, and also the connecting
piping, must be free from strain. Pay particular attention that the flow is, in the correct
direction through the filter element. The correct direction is marked on the filter casing.
III ATTATCHMENTS :
If the filter is equipped with a heating jacket or base heating and there is the possibility
that a steam cushion may form, the attachments are required;
1. For steam heated filters:
A relieve-valve for the filter chamber, set to operate at the maximum permissible
Operating pressure of the filter casing.
2. For electrically heated filters:
A thermostat which cuts off the supply to the heater plate at the maximum permissible
Temperature. i.c., 150 C.
Heating of the filter is used during the filtering operation to make good the heat losses
at thefilter, or before starting up the plant, to heat up the liquid present in the filter.
IV. STARTING UP AND CLEANING:
A. PRESSURE FILTER:
1. Open the air vent.
2. Start up the plant slowly.
3. Close the air vent when the air has ecaped and liquid begins to issue; the filter is now
ready for operation.
4. When the filterelement is dirty, isolate the plant or the filter by closing the stop valves
fitted at the inlet and outlet.
5. Open the air vent to release the pressure in the filter casing.
6. Open the drain plug outlet and empty the filter completely.
7. Remove the cover of e casing and take out the filter element.
8. Clean the filter element, or in the case of microcartridges take new element. Clean the
filter mesh with a suitable cleaning agent assisted by blowing through the mesh from
the clean side.
9. Insert the cleaned filter element or the new cartridge.
10. Put the cover back on the casing, leaving the air vent open. Before putting back the
cover, make sure that the seal is in good condition, and properly seated; replace the
seal if necessary.
11. Close the sludge outlet, checking here too that the seal is in good condition.
12. Start up the plant slowly, or slightly open the stop valve at the inlet.
13. Close the air vent after the air has escaped and liquid has started to issue from it. The
filter is now ready for operation.
B. SUCTION FILTER:
1. Full up the filter and vent the air.
2. Start up the plant or open the stop valves at the inlet and outlet of the filter. The
Filter is now ready to operate.
3. When the filter elements are dirty, shut down the plant or close the stop valves.
4. Proceed as described under pressure filters, para 6 to 11.
5. Fill up the filter, close the air vent and start up the plant slowly, or open the
Stop valves at the inlet and outlet of the filter.
The filter is now ready and operate.
V. SERVICING:
Servicing of the single filter comprises checking the seals and filter mesh and
Renewing if necessary. If the filter is painted for protection against corrosion,
Touch up the paint, or repaint, as required.
