Elementary Mathematics Methods - Assignment
Elementary Mathematics Methods - Assignment
General Information
Lesson Title: Measuring Lengths
Subject(s): Math
Grade/Level/Setting: First grade
Prerequisite Skills/Prior Knowledge:
Learners must know how to count in order: 1, 2, 3 They should also be able to write numbers.
Additionally, they need to know terms such as greater, lesser, or the same.
Standards and Objectives
State/National Academic Standard(s):
1.MDR.6.1 Estimate, measure, and record lengths of objects using non-standard units, and
compare and order up to three objects using the recorded measurements. Describe the objects
compared.
Learning Objective(s):
Pupils will be able to measure the lengths of 12 items in the classroom with the use of non-standard
units, achieving an accuracy rate of 85%.
Materials Technology
Teacher will display 12 sets of items for the Teacher will model measuring using the
students to measure. For examples textbooks, smartboard. I will show students how to measure
papers, boxes. paperclips or to measure the different objects. I
will display images of the items on the
smartboard.
Language Demands
Specific ways that academic language (vocabulary, functions, discourse, syntax) is used by students to participate
in learning tasks through reading, writing, listening, and/or speaking to demonstrate their understanding.
Language Function(s):
I will have an anchor chart that shows the vocabulary - length, measure, smaller, larger,
and equal. I’ll also add simple definitions and pictures to help students understand what each word
means
Vocabulary:
equal, length, measure, align, unit
Discourse and/or Syntax:
Students will look at the lengths they recorded and use them to compare the different objects they
measured. They will talk about which ones are longer, shorter, or the same based on their
measurements.
Planned Language Supports:
In the days before the activity, we’ll review the key vocabulary words and tools together. I’ll show
students how to use the words correctly by modeling them in real examples.
Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks
Anticipatory Set:
Activity Description/Teacher Student Actions
I will show students different ways to Students will listen carefully as the teacher
measure objects using various tools. I’ll also explains the different tools used for measuring.
ask if they’ve ever used any of these tools After the explanation, they will answer questions
before, so we can connect the lesson to to show what they’ve learned about each tool.
their own experiences.
Presentation Procedures for New Information and/or Modeling:
Activity Description/Teacher Student Actions
To begin the lesson, I will read the learning Students will talk about the new vocabulary
goal with the class and introduce new words together. This gives them a chance to ask
vocabulary words: equal, length, measure, questions and share their ideas. While the

of items using paperclips and cubes. I will
model how to record their measurements on
paper using the smartboard.
Guided Practice:
Activity Description/Teacher Student Actions
I will invite volunteers to come up to the The volunteers will measure the objects at the
smartboard and measure different items front of the class, so the other students can see
using paperclips or cubes. After each item is what is happening. After completing the

‘Which item is the smallest?’ ‘Which one is from the teacher and provide explanation about
the largest?’ and ‘Is object B smaller or their answers.
larger than object A?’ This helps students
think and talk about what they’ve learned.
Independent Student Practice:
Activity Description/Teacher Student Actions
Teacher will give students the objects they After students receive their materials, they will
need to measure as well as worksheets to begin measuring the objects. Once they finish
write down their answers. measuring an item, they will write down the
length on their recording sheet. Then, they will
wait quietly until the teacher gives the signal to
switch to the next item. After all the objects have
been measured, students will complete the
questions on their worksheet.
Culminating or Closing Procedure/Activity:

teacher will then collect objects measures.
The teacher will then engage in a
questioning session where she ask specific
students to respond to questions.
Differentiated Instruction
Consider how to accommodate for the needs of each type of student. Be sure that you provide content specific
accommodations that help to meet a variety of learning needs.
Gifted and Talented:
Students will use paper to create a teddy bear and give it arms, legs and a tail. Next they will use
cubes or paper clips to measure the length of each part. They will count how many cubes or paper
clips they use. Next they will write on their worksheet arm: How many cubes or paper clip. They will
repeat this for the arm, leg and tail.
EL:
For my EL students I will have provide them with pictures of the objects they have to measure. The
Paraprofessional will read the instruction for them in English and their native language.
Students with Other Special Needs:
I will have the special needs students measuring with paperclips only. They will have fewer items to
measure.
Assessment
Formative
Throughout the activity, I will be moving around to monitor the students as they engage in their work.
This will allow me to evaluate their grasp of the task and determine if they need further help or
clarification. I will be easily accessible for any inquiries. Additionally, I will gauge the students'
comprehension by posing questions while I circulate around the room.
Summative
(Quizzes, Tests, products)
To check students’ understanding, I will give a short quiz where they measure the length of different
objects shown in pictures. Each object will be placed above a row of paperclips. Some objects will
start at the beginning of the paperclips, while others will begin in the middle or near the end. This will
help assess whether students can measure accurately, even when the object isn’t lined up at the
