INTEGERS ( CHAPTER - 6)

POINTS TO REMEMBER:
1. Negative numbers can be used in temperature scale, water level in lake or river, level
of oil in tank etc. They are also used to denote debit accounts or outstanding dues.
2. The collection of numbers..., – 4, – 3, – 2, – 1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ... is called integers. So, – 1, –
2, – 3, – 4, ... called negative numbers are negative integers and 1, 2, 3, 4, ... called
positive numbers are the positive integers.
3. (a) When we have the same sign, add and put the same sign.
(i) When two positive integers are added, we get a positive integer [e.g. (+ 3) + ( + 2) = + 5].
(ii) When two negative integers are added, we get a negative integer [e.g. (–2) + ( – 1) = – 3].
(b) When one positive and one negative integers are added we subtract them as
whole numbers by considering the numbers without their sign and then put the sign
of the bigger number with the subtraction obtained. The bigger integer is decided by
ignoring the signs of the integers [e.g. (+4) + (–3) = + 1 and (–4) + ( + 3) = – 1].
(c) The subtraction of an integer is the same as the addition of its additive inverse.
4. Addition and subtraction of integers can also be shown on a number line.

Section A
1.The number of integers between ー2 and 2 is
(a) 3 (b) 5 (c)4 (d)2

2. Which of the following is true?

(a) 0 < – 8 ( b) 0 > – 8 (c ) 4 < – 4 (d) 0 > 6

3 The predecessor of the integer ( ー 1 ) is

a. 0 c. ー2
b. 2 d. 1

4 Observe the number line below and write the distance between Reeta and Seema.

5 .The succeeding number of – 1 is___________

6 Calculate : 1 ー 2 + 3 ー 4 + 5 ー 6 + 7 ー 8 + 9 ー 10
7 If profit is represented by ‘+’ sign, then ..............is represented by ‘– ‘ sign.

8 Assertion (A) – Greatest negative integer is (– 1).

9 Assertion (A) – The succeeding number of the number – 1 is 0

Reason (R) – Succeeding number is the number which is 1 more than the given number.

a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A

c) A is true but R is false

d) A is false but R is true

10 Assertion (A) – Zero is smaller than every positive integer.

Reason (R) – Every negative integer is smaller than zero

a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A

c) A is true but R is false

d) A is false but R is true
