Subject: List of things to do

Good morning Ali,

Here are your tasks for today.

First, could you complete the advertisement for the Pet Palace? You can use the template provided. For
the information, refer to the comments on the Doggy Lodge website and the comparison table I put
together for the kennel and the new hotel. I also spoke about this in my recent podcast interview, so
have a listen to that as well.

Second, please write a blog post about the Doggy Lodge kennel. There’s a twist, though: I’d like you
to write it from the point of view of a dog who stayed there! Make sure to describe the overall
experience in a very positive light, and also mention all the fun things ‘you’ (meaning the dog) got to
do at the kennel. Refer to the customer comments and the comparison table again to help you.

Third, please write an email of response to Colin Chow, who is interested in a job at the Pet Palace. As
you can see from the to-do list that I forwarded you, we do actually have an opening for him. Give him
the details of the job and make sure to answer all his questions. Check your notes from the podcast
again to help you.

Finally, I had a WhatsApp exchange with Ricardo where we discussed all of the above. Also refer to
that to help you with the tasks.

Thanks,

Joanne

Thanks Doggy Lodge! My pooch Lasso had an awesome week with you guys recently—I could tell the
experience was like a fun and exciting vacation for him!
Lizzie
Couldn’t agree more! My dog Barney doesn’t get to spend much time around other dogs
usually, but at the Doggy Lodge he had loads of canine friends to play with. I could tell he really
enjoyed that.

Joanne Chiu—Manager @ Furry Friends Forever

Great to hear the positive feedback! If your dogs loved the Doggy Lodge, they’ll absolutely adore our
new pet hotel, the Pet Palace! It’ll provide proper luxury accommodation for your furry friends, and a
2,000 square-foot garden for them to run around in!
Lizzie
Wow, that sounds fantastic! Any other upgrades compared to the DL?
Joanne Chiu—Manager @ Furry Friends Forever
Lots! Can’t give you all the details just yet, but I can tell you there’ll be a grooming
service—oh, and you’ll be able to treat your pet to a massage!

WhatsApp chat between Ricardo Yeung and Joanne Chiu

Wednesday 2 October

Ricardo: Hey Joanne, good news: that cat expert I mentioned just signed on
as a consultant for PP. IOW, our feline friends will be welcome at the hotel!

Joanne: Excellent! Any word on the reptiles?

Ricardo: Let me check with Kevin, the reptile

guru we were hoping to hire—I’ll get back to you.

Joanne: 👍👍

Ricardo: Yup, he’s on board!

Joanne: Wow, that was quick! Great work! Another thing:

remember my idea for a blog post about DL?

Ricardo: Yeah, I love it! What about it?

Joanne: Well, how about starting it like this: ‘My name is Ruff and I’m a very happy pooch.’

Ricardo: Sure, sounds good. And I take it he’s happy

because he’s just enjoyed an awesome stay at DL?

Joanne: Exactly. I was thinking a two-week stay.

Ricardo: OK, sure. Just one thing, though. The post should talk about the
food, of course, but I don’t think we should mention any brand names.

Joanne: Yeah, fair point. So just ‘delicious’ or something like that, then. One
final question: what would you say is a fair salary for part-time work at PP?

Ricardo: You mean for Colin Chow? I’d say HK$100/hour. As long as
he’s fluent in both Cantonese and English—that’s definitely a requirement
for the job. Will you be asking him to come for an interview?

Joanne: Yeah, was thinking Saturday 12 October, at 3 p.m.

Joanne Chiu’s to-do list for the Pet Palace

Things to do
● Write an ad (Ali?)
● Talk to the interior decorators about the necessary changes to the rooms
● Scout for some nice dog-walking trails in the area
● Find a part-time receptionist (to work weekends + public holidays—needs great people skills)
● Finalize the budget!!!

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is Colin Chow, and I am writing to enquire whether you have any job openings at your new pet
hotel, the Pet Palace. I am a huge animal lover, so working at a place like the Pet Palace would be a dream
come true for me.

If you do have positions available, I would appreciate it if you could let me know what they are and what
requirements I would have to meet. If at all possible, I would also like to know what kind of salary I could
expect.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Subject: List of things to do

Morning Ali,

Here are your tasks for today.

First, we have received an email of complaint from Mrs Diane Leung, whose puppy stayed at the Doggy
Lodge recently. Please write a reply to her, addressing her complaints. Regarding the first one, refer to
the Dog Lovers Weekly article I’ve forwarded to you for an explanation. Make sure to use a polite tone
in your email.

Next, we’re planning to release a radio advertisement for our upcoming competition. I’d like you to
write the script for it. Start by explaining why we’re holding this competition, and then give the listeners
all the relevant details about it. There is some information about this on the HK Events website, so start
by taking a look at that.

Finally, I’d like you to write a newsletter article about the special Pet Palace offers we have for all our
existing clients. Brittany had some thoughts on this, so start by referring to her email to me.

Note that I spoke about all of the above in my recent Pet Talk interview, so please have a listen to that.
I’ve also forwarded you an SMS exchange I had with Ricardo, which should help you with all of these
tasks.

Thanks,

Joanne
Minutes of Furry Friends Forever staff meeting

Date and time: Wednesday 2 October, 11 a.m.

Venue: Conference Room
Chairperson: Joanne Chiu
Members: Ricardo Yeung
Brittany Airedale
Secretary: Ali Wang

Minutes of meeting

Ms Chiu announced that a date had finally been set for the competition, namely 2 November. She further
proposed that the entry fee for the contestants—or, rather, their owners—be increased fairly substantially,
given that the profits of the competition will go to a good cause. After some discussion, it was decided that
it would be appropriate to double the fee previously agreed upon.

With the opening of the Pet Palace drawing nearer, Ms Airedale suggested that we should offer some
incentives to our existing clients to get them interested in the new pet hotel. She proposed giving them a
25% discount on accommodation during the first three months. All agreed. Ms Chiu asked for some
additional ideas regarding incentives, and several suggestions were offered up. In the end, it was agreed
that all existing clients would be offered a complimentary massage for their pets if they check into the Pet
Palace.

Email from Mrs Diane Leung

To: Furry Friends Forever Sent: Thu 3 October 11.21 AM

From: Diane Leung
Subject: Unsatisfactory stay at the Doggy Lodge

Dear Sir/Madam,

My puppy Merlin recently stayed at the Doggy Lodge, from Sunday 22 September until Friday 27
September. I chose the Doggy Lodge as the home-away-from-home for Merlin when I was called away
on a conference because I had heard good reports about it from some friends of mine. Unfortunately, I
was left disappointed, for two main reasons.

First, I left a box of Doggle Snacks—Merlin’s favourite treat—with your staff when I checked him in.
However, when I came to pick him up, the box was returned to me unopened. Could you please explain
to me why Merlin was not allowed to eat his preferred food?

Second, I had been told by my friends that the Doggy Lodge offers agility training for the dogs that
stay there. Imagine my dismay, then, when I was informed that Merlin had not taken part in any such
training. An explanation would be much appreciated here as well.

I had high hopes for the Doggy Lodge, but it appears that your establishment did not live up to them.
Should you fail to provide a satisfactory response, I will be forced to look for another, better kennel
the next time I am away from Merlin.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Diane Leung

SMS messages between Ricardo Yeung and Joanne Chiu

3 October

Ricardo Yeung 12.25pm

Hey Joanne, did you see that email from Mrs Leung?

Joanne Chiu 12.27pm

Yeah, I did. Seemed like much ado about nothing to me, though—shouldn’t be too hard to
address her complaints.

Ricardo Yeung 12.28pm

Of course. She seemed pretty upset about her pup missing out on the training though. Should we
perhaps offer her a free session as a sign of goodwill?

Joanne Chiu 12.30pm

Sure, good idea! Let’s tell her Merlin can take part any time—as long as it’s on the right day, of
course! Oh, and assuming she gives us the required notice beforehand, obviously.

Ricardo Yeung 12.31pm

One more thing: didn’t say anything in the meeting but I’m a bit worried that the competition
entry fee might be a bit too steep now—don’t you agree?

Joanne Chiu 12.35pm

I don’t think so. I mean, all the profits will go to our dog rescue centre. I’m sure if we tell ppl
that in the ad, they’ll be happy to pay the higher fee. BTW, I had some thoughts after the
meeting as well, re the PP offers for existing clients. I think the discount should stay in effect a
bit longer, like twice as long. And re the freebie you suggested, I’d say that should only be
available to pets who stay at least three nights.

Ricardo Yeung 12.37pm

Sure, you’re the boss! And about the open day, there’ll be limited places, right? So we’ll have
to tell ppl to sign up if they want to go. Should we tell them to do that on our website?

Joanne Chiu 12.39pm

Nah, Ali will be writing an online newsletter article about it, so better just to include a link and
ask them to click it.
Article from Dog Lovers Weekly magazine

Feeding time
Dog owners have more choices than ever before when it comes to feeding their pooches, but not all dog
food is created equal. After thoroughly examining the existing research and thousands of customer
reviews, we can confidently state that the following are the very best dog food brands in the world today:
1 Vet’s Choice
2 Regal Canine
3 Furry Feed
4 Pedigree Pup
5 Eureka
Right at the other end of the scale, however, there are some popular brands out there that we do NOT
recommend, as they contain chemicals that could be harmful to your dog. We’d therefore strongly advise
you to stay away from the likes of Growl Grub, Doggle Snacks and Mutt Munchies.

November
One of the most eye-catching event listings this month has to be Furry Friends Forever’s … let’s call it
‘anti-beauty’ competition for dogs. The winning contestant will receive the questionable honour of being
declared the most hideous canine in the 852, but there are also some genuinely enticing prizes on offer.
Not only will the dog that comes out triumphant be featured in the TV ads for FFF’s new upmarket pet
hotel, the Pet Palace, but he or she will also get a free two-week stay in this classy establishment. Think
your furry friend has what it takes to win this competition? Then we strongly recommend that you sign
him, her or it up right this very second!

Yes! I love that idea! Best thing would probably be to hold it the day before the hotel actually opens, so
it’s not so busy. I’ll tell Ali to mention this in the newsletter article, and to describe PP using the official
tagline, ‘luxury accommodation for your furry friend’.

Subject: Promoting PP
Hi Joanne,
You know how we talked in the meeting yesterday about ways to get our existing clients interested in the
Pet Palace? Well, I’ve had another idea that I think is pretty good. How about we organize an open day at
PP for these people (and their pets as well, if they want to bring them)? You know, just so they can see for
themselves how amazing it is. I was thinking there could be a guided tour for them, where they get to
check out all the facilities and such. What do you reckon?
Cheers,
Brittany
