Separation Method: Magnetic separation
Aim: The aim of this experiment is to use a magnet to separate iron filings from sand.
Materials:
● 2 x ______________________
● 1 x ______________________
● 1 x ______________________
● 1 x A4 sheet of paper
● _________________________
● Iron filings
Method:
1. Measure the weight of the iron filings.
2. Mix the sand and iron fillings in a beaker with a stirring rod.
3. Pour and spread out the mixture onto an A4 paper.
4. Hover the magnet over the mixture and let the iron filings separate from the sand.
5. Scrape the iron filings into a beaker and measure the weight of the filings.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all the iron filings have been separated.

Separation Method: Decanting
Aim: The aim of this experiment is to use decanting to separate sand from the mixture.
Materials:
● 2 x beaker
● 1 x stirring rod
● Sand
● Water
Method:
1. Add the sand and water into a beaker until its three-quarter full.
2. Mix the sand and water with a stirring rod.
3. Let the mixture stand.
4. Hold a stirring rod at a 45-degree angle against the spout of the beaker and use
the spout as a slot for the stirring rod to fit into. Make sure that half of the stirring
rod is sticking out away from the beaker.
5. Carefully pour the mixture into a new beaker until all or most of the liquid has been
poured. Ensure it is poured slowly so the sand isn't disturbed at the bottom.
Separation Method: Filtration
Aim: The aim of this experiment is to use filtration to separate tea leaves from the
mixture.

Method
1. Add the tea leaves into the beaker.
2. Add hot water into the beaker until it's about half full.
3. Stir the mixture of water and tea leaves with your stirring rod.
4. Create a filter with the filter paper and place it in the filter funnel.
5. Place the filter funnel in the mouth of the conical flask.
6. Slowly pour the tea-leave mixture into the filter funnel until all the mixture has
passed through.
