Lesson Psychoanalyis
6
“The mind is like an iceberg; it floats with one-seventh of its bulk above water.”- Sigmund
Freud. Understanding the human mind is fundamental in psychoanalytic theory. That is how
the theory of Sigmund Freud in the early 1900 is begun and despite the many advancements
in the study of psychoanalytic theory, Freud’s basic thoughts retain a strong hold in the shaping
of views regarding the theory of the human mind. Almost every day we describe and assess
the personalities of the people around us. "She has such a great personality," somebody might
say about a friend. While we spend a lot of time talking about personality, many people are
not quite sure exactly how and what personality psychology is really all about. Let us take a
closer look at exactly what psychologists mean when they talk about personality, how they
study human personality, and some of the key theories of personality.
What’s In
Remember me!
In the previous lesson, you have learned so much about symbolic- interactionism. This time,
let us see how much you remember about it by giving examples, related terms, or meanings.
Fill in the boxes with your answer.
What’s New
Eyes Verge!
Do you know who or what is behind the metaphorical angel and devil sitting on your shoulders?
This lesson examines this type of internal debate by addressing Freud’s work on the different
sides of our conscious and unconscious selves- the id, ego, and superego. You will be able to
have a glimpse on how the mind works and how it leads to a constructive decision making.
Let us try which among the three will dominate in you through answering this task.

What I Have Learned
Key Takeaways
✓ Sigmund Freud is the known proponent of Psychoanalysis.
✓ The levels of awareness were comprised of: Consciousness is best understood as
having an awareness of something, being able to call it to mind, it would seem simple
enough to qualify only those events we can recall as the activities of the human mind.
Subconscious is the storage point for any recent memories needed for quick recall,
such as what your telephone number is or the name of a person you just met.
Unconscious mind is where all of our memories and experiences reside. It is the
storehouse of all your deep-seated emotions that have been programmed since birth.
✓ Freud‟s psychodynamics or tripartite person‟s personality were: Id is the source
of all psychic energy and is present already from birth; Ego is responsible for dealing
with reality as expressed in a manner acceptable in the real world; while Superego
acts to perfect and civilize one‟s behavior. Each component adds its own contribution
to one‟s personality and interacts in ways that have a powerful influence on each
individual. Each of these three elements of personality emerges at different points in
life.
