Mathematics is a subject which most of the learners find as a hard subject. A
lot of them don’t find it interesting and difficult. As a Mathematics teacher, my goal is
to make my learners spur an interest on it. That they may be able to understand,
learned and appreciated it or even make it their favorite subject. I’d like them to
realize that they can use Mathematics in their daily lives whether at home, in school
and wherever they go. This goal can only be achieved through a learner-centered
teaching philosophy.
This day was my first day of teaching Mathematics in my class and the other
section. I have the chance to make my goal come into reality. I observed that the
approach that I used in teaching my learners played a great impact on their learning
experiences. They have been very participative and enjoyed the learning process.
The first thing I did is, I made a lesson plan that boost the learners’
participation. I aimed to promote a learning that is thru experiential and fun. I want
my learners to learn by doing. I started my lesson by telling them what will they learn
from our lesson today. I told them that the things that they will learn today is
something which they can use in their everyday life.
Moreover, I combined various hands-on activities, group discussions and
games to enrich the classroom learning experience. By doing this, I encouraged the
learners to make a supportive and comprehensive learning setting where they found
comfort in expressing their thoughts and learning from each other. Those who are
slow learners are being taught by those fast learners. It’s easy for them to ask their
groupmates because it is more comfortable to them.
Aside from that, I also used activities that let the learners discover our lesson
more based on the examples I gave them. I perceived that they were very engaged and
enthusiastic to learn and do the activities.
To make the lesson more meaningful and will be remembered by the learners,
I incorporate real-life situation and experiences in the examples and activities I gave
them. In this way, they will be able to give importance on the things they learn from
the lesson.
