Meristematic tissue is the plant tissue that has the ability
to divide actively throughout its life.
Depending on the region where they are present,
meristematic tissues are classified as-
Apical meristem
Apical meristem
Lateral meristem
Lateral meristem
Lateral meristem
Intercalary meristem
Intercalary meristem
Intercalary meristem
The characteristics of meristematic tissue are as follows:

● The cells of meristematic tissue are living , compactly arranged

(inter cellular space absent) and immature.
● They have thin cellulosic cell walls and dense cytoplasm,
prominent nuclei.
Meristematic cells lack vacuoles. Vacuoles store food
and contain cell sap which provides rigidity to a cell. This
property of vacuoles may not allow the meristematic cells
to divide and manufacture new cells.
The characteristics of meristematic tissue are as follows:

● The meristematic tissue has the quality of self-renewal.

Every time the cell divides, one cell remains identical to the
parent cell, and the others form specialised structures.
Group of cells responsible for growth in plants are known as

(a)Meristematic tissue
(b)Simple permanent tissue
(c)Complex permanent tissue
(d)None of these
Which of the following plant tissue increases length of
internodes in grasses such as sugarcane, bamboo etc ?

(d)Xylem and phloem
Which of the following plant tissue increases height of the
plant?

(a)Meristematic tissue - Apical meristem

(b)Simple permanent tissue - Apical meristem
(c)Complex permanent tissue - Intercalary Meristem
(d)Meristematic tissue - Lateral meristem
