Compromises Map Analysis

In 1810, the United States had 18 states and 4 territories, with an equal number of slave and free states. The Compromise of 1820 added Maine as a free state and Mississippi as a slave state, establishing the Missouri Compromise Line to maintain a balance between slave and free states. California's desire to join as a free state posed a problem as the Missouri Compromise Line cut through it, while Utah and New Mexico territories were open to slavery.
