Exercise

The document outlines a statistical investigation into the association between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, including the construction of a 2x2 contingency table and calculations of lung cancer percentages among smokers and nonsmokers. It also includes a dataset of weights for 20 adults, requiring the construction of a frequency distribution table, and a section on distinguishing between qualitative and quantitative variables, as well as independent and dependent variables. Additionally, it covers random sampling, variance, and the calculation of mean and median ages from a given dataset.

) You would like to investigate the association between cigarette smoking and lung cancer in
your country, among participants attending the referral hospital. Among 500 participants
selected, 100 reported smoking cigarettes: 30 participants were diagnosed to have lung cancers
and among them 12 never smoked in their life. Use this information to answer the following (All
answers in 1 decimal place).

a) Construct the 2x2 contingency table (5 marks)

b) Use your table to calculate the following.

I. percentage of lung cancer among nonsmokers (1 marks)

ii. Percentage of lung cancer among smokers (1 mark)

iii. Use your answer in I and ii above to conclude on the association between cigarette smoking
and lung cancer.

2.) The following are the weights of 20 adults obtained in the clinic.

20, 50, 20, 22, 30, 45, 18, 33, 60, 55 ,50 ,70 , 24 , 32 , 52, 25, 28, 63, 54, 29.
