a.Electrical-mechanical-light. b.Chemical-mechanical-light
c. Chemical-electrical- light. d.Nuclear-electrical-light
2. The unit of current is
a.coulomb. b.Volt. c.Ohm. d. Ampere
3. Bulb is connected to voltage source by increasing the voltage the brightness of the bulb will
a.increase. b.decrease. c.reduce to zero. d. Stay the same
4. The primary purpose of a resister is to
a.Increase current. b.limit current c.produce current. d.resist current change
5. The wire made from which of the following material is conductor
a.glass b.rubber c.gold. d. silica

10. Electromagnetic device which make of electromagnet is
a.resistor b.bulb c.door bell d.three plug pin

B. Short Questions
1. Why an electrical device need two conducting path from a voltage source to operate?
In electric circuits the voltage source (battery) pushes the electron in a loop, converting electrical energy into
light energy, sound energy etc. Electrical device needs two conducting path from voltage source, one from
battery to electrical device and other path for returning back to battery. Electron must travel in a complete
circuit and return to their original location if this were not the case , negative charges would collect in one
location while positive would accumulate in another location.
2. Why do wires usually warm up when an electric current passes through them?
Wires usually warm up due to having electrical resistance. It means that the atoms of conducting wire resist
motion of electrons .These electrons collide with the atoms of metal due to which some of their kinetic energy is
given to atoms as thermal energy. This thermal energy causes the wire to heat up.
3. During a floor grinding and polishing repairs in your house, the fuse blows when the operator start his
heavy machine. He wants to replace a fuse by a piece of wire. Would you agree? Give reasons for your
response.
Yes he can replace fuse with any metal wire.
The fuse consists of a thin piece of metal wire that has low melting temperature. When heavy machinery is
operated excessive current flows through it, the wire inside it gets hot and melts and disconnects the circuit.
Whereas fuse is replaced with a metal wire that have high melting point so it may not melt easily when large
current passes through it. Hence it allows flow of much power to operate heavy machines.
4. Explain why is it dangerous if you use hair dryer in a bathtub?
We should always stay away from water when using electric appliances. Using hair dryer in a bathtub could
result in electrocution. The damp skin is more conductive than dry skin and the current will flow from hair dryer
to the ground through the water.
5. What advantage will a crane have with electromagnet over other cranes? Can it use a permanent
magnet?
Electromagnets allow industries to work at much more efficient rate. The electromagnets can get magnetic
nature as when required so they can lift heavy load. After lifting or moving loads to other places, the
electromagnet can be release the load by losing the magnetic property. So permanent magnets are not used in
cranes.
D. Structured Questions
Q1. There is a different resistance to flow of current by different materials. Consider the circuit shown in
figure having two terminals T1 and T2. When copper wire is connected between the terminals and
switches on the bulb glows. When nichrome wire and plastic strings having same thickness as copper wire
replaces it, how would the glow change in each case?
a. In case of nichrome wire the bulb will glow with less brightness
because it offers more resistance then copper wire.
b. The bulb will not glow when we will connect plastic wire between
these two terminals because plastic is an insulator, it will not allow
the charges to flow.
Q2. Electromagnets with different arrangements are shown and figure
a. Why the powerful cell increases the strength of electromagnet?
According to the formula
B = (constant) n I. B = magnetic field
B is directly proportional to I n = number of turns
I = current

The strength of electromagnet is increased by increasing the electric current and electric current can be
increased by using a powerful cell.
b. What effect has the number of turns in the coil on the strength of electromagnet?
According to the formula
B = (constant) n I. B = magnetic field
B is directly proportional to n n = number of turns and I = current
The strength of magnetic field is directly related to number of turns in
the coil so by increasing number of turns the strength of magnetic field
will also increase.
c. How the strength of electromagnet will change if we increase the thickness of wire or size of core?
This strength of magnet will increase with the increase in thickness of wire because per unit area, more
electrons will pass through a thick wire.
