Coolant Level Sensor (F656) DAF E6

The document describes the operation of the coolant level sensor (F656) monitored by the VIC-3 system, which detects four coolant levels: Normal, Daily check, Low, and Sensor malfunction. Each level corresponds to specific resistance readings and triggers appropriate warnings on the vehicle's instrument panel. Additionally, the document emphasizes that the information is specific to a particular chassis number and may change daily.

Coolant level sensor (F656)

VIC-3 monitors the level of the coolant in the "Coolant reservoir" by checking
the resistance of the coolant level sensor (F656). The sensor consists of
two resistors in series with parallel switched 'reed' contacts. The magnetic
float fitted in the expansion reservoir switches the Reed contacts.

VIC-3 can detect four different levels:
Normal
Daily check
Low
Sensor malfunction

'Normal' level
Switch S1 is closed and the 100-Ohm resistor is short-circuited. The total
resistance is about 270 Ohm.

'Daily check' level

The 'daily check' is only performed during vehicle start-up. The VIC-3
ECU will activate the yellow warning 'Coolant level low' on the instrument
panel. Topping up of the coolant is advisable (no 'must'). This warning will
disappear after 20 seconds or when the vehicle speed exceeds 3 km/h.
At re-start-up, the daily check is performed again and no warning will
appear when a normal level is detected.

Switches S1 and S2 are both open and the total resistance is about 370
Ohm.

'Low' level
The VIC-3 ECU activates the red warning 'Coolant level too low' on the
instrument panel. Coolant must be topped up.

Switch S2 is closed, resulting in a total resistance of about 100 Ohm

Sensor fault
When the VIC-3 ECU detects a total sensor resistance above or below
the tolerance, a sensor malfunction is detected. The VIC-3 ECU activates
the yellow warning 'Coolant level sensor defect' on the instrument panel
and a DTC is stored.
